“Winners make history.” ―Kevin McCarthy
Make no mistake: modern information warfare is here and January 6th was just the first battle. That day, an unhinged mindset led to an attack on the Capitol, the most serious assault on American democracy since the end of the Civil War. And that thinking portends even darker days ahead.
In The Breach, a former House Republican and the first member of Congress to sound the alarm about QAnon, Denver Riggleman, provides readers with an unprecedented behind-the-scenes look at the January 6th select committee’s investigation. Riggleman, who joined the committee as senior technical advisor after he was asked to help, lays out the full intent and scope of the plot to overturn the election. The book includes previously unpublished texts from key political leaders. And it also contains shocking details about the Trump White House’s links to militant extremist groups―even during the almost-eight-hour period on January 6th when the White House supposedly had no phone calls. The man responsible for unearthing Mark Meadows’s infamous texts shows how data analysis shapes the contours of our new war, telling how the committee uncovered many of its explosive findings and sharing revealing stories from his time in the Trump-era GOP.
With unique insights from within the far-right movement and from the front lines of the courageous team investigating it, Riggleman shows how our democracy is balanced on a knife’s edge between disinformation and truth. Here is a revelatory peek at the inner workings of the January 6th committee and a clear-eyed look at the existential threats facing our republic―and a blueprint for how America can fight to survive the darkest night before the dawn.

In the Author’s Note, Riggleman contends that his unique perspective and life history allows him to provide some valuable insights into the background of the events that took place on January 6th. His decades of experience working in military intelligence, years spent as a Republican congressman, and role as advisor to the January 6th committee all contribute to his ability to expertly analyze these events and predict future risks.
Chapter 1 begins with Riggleman’s description of the process of attempting to sift through call records, to identify which government officials were in contact with each other on January 6th. Riggleman himself had served as a politician for two years, but it is clear from his approach to this investigation that he is primarily relying on his many years of military intelligence experience. His use of intelligence terminology and procedures might be familiar to anyone with some knowledge of the field. Chapter 2 focuses on call data provided by Mark Meadows, (Trump’s chief of staff), and how key this data was in connecting to other individuals. Here Riggleman shares many actual text messages that were sent to Meadows and other government officials.
In Chapter 3 Riggleman discusses some of his own personal history. Chapter 4 discusses the history of Q Anon, and Riggleman’s own path to becoming a congressman. Chapter 5 goes into more details about the specific members and advisors to the January 6th committee, and the processes of the investigation. Chapter 6 focuses on an investigation firm in Pennsylvania that Riggleman worked with to sift through data related to January 6th, and how the team of researchers was organized. In Chapter 7 Riggleman discusses government connections to specific people and organizations, including Roger Stone, Alex Jones, The Proud Boys, Oath Keepers, and more. In Chapter 8 he discusses the backlash he received from friends and family, including his own mother, for being perceived as a “traitor” to his political party. Chapter 9 describes interactions with congressman Rodney Davis. Chapters 10 and 11 are mostly focused on analyzing information provided by and/or related to Patrick Byrne. Chapter 12 deals with Ray Epps and events on January 5th. In Chapter 13 Riggleman discusses Virginia Thomas, wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, and includes some of her texts to Mark Meadows.
Overall, this book does indeed provide a unique perspective on the events of January 6th. In an era filled with so much pointless, political-opponent-bashing content, this book was an interesting change of pace. Riggleman’s motivation here is not to simply pander to one side of the political spectrum and support his “tribe”; in fact, he seems to have the perspective of a military intelligence officer more so than a politician. You may not agree with all of Riggleman’s conclusions, but you might be able to respect his desire to uncover the truth, instead of blindly following political conventions. Everyone has their own motivations and biases, but Riggleman includes his personal history here along with the information he has collected, so that you can sift through it all, consider the source, and come to your own conclusions.
Data, facts and numbers for the most part do not lie. Riggleman lays out the methods he and others used to identify many of the participants and planners for January 6, and makes a very strong case against Meadows, Miller, and others. He paints a very real portrait of the mob mentality at work behind QAnon, Proud Boys and other groups, and traces how a seemingly small statement or gesture can explode into distorted headlines. In an interesting side note, he also reveals how one seemingly innocent man (Ray Epps) was swept up into the right-wing narrative and vilified, resulting in his ruin.
Finally, in light of current news and events, there is a chapter on Ginni Thomas and her husband, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas that is mind-boggling!
With that chapter, Riggleman ties together all of the elements that created January 6 -- and it is not a pretty picture! Every part of our government was involved in some form or fashion in creating the insurrection and the resulting chaos.
Other reviewers mentioned his personal stories and background. They are useful in learning about him, but they also portray the rifts and new realities many of us face in our families and intimate relationships. I know within my own family that we can no longer discuss many topics that are now taboo.
No one book can encompass every detail or aspect of January 6 and the resulting investigation, and Riggleman is careful to state that. What he does do is open the door to provide a glimpse into the background of the investigation, the methods used, and the results. I highly recommend it!
