He is the author of seven books on beverage alcohol. Brilliant reference book

I own all three editions of F. Paul Pacult's Kindred Spirits. I was very much looking forward to getting this latest edition, and it does not disappoint. Pacult's knowledge is vast, his introductory material is enlightening, and his descriptions are colorful, full of sensory detail, and sometimes very entertaining. Here, for example, is his (uncharacteristically brief) description of Cointreau:

Cointreau Liqueur (France) 40% abv, $45
Cointreau is without question the finest, most versatile liqueur ever made and one of the world's top two greatest spirits. Not only is Cointreau the triple sec backbone of countless classic cocktails, such as the Margarita, Cosmopolitan, Sidecar, Brandy Crusta, Corpse Reviver #2, Mai Tai, Seelbach, and Pegu Club, but it is luscious on its own, slightly chilled. There, this is all you'll ever need to know about it. Now, go buy a case.

Pacult is certainly a character, and VERY decided in his opinions. I'm sure that aficionados won't agree with all of his assessments, but he is well worth reading. Those unfamiliar with his previous work should know that most of his reviews are more detailed than his love note to Cointreau, and that over half of the book is devoted to whiskeys and brandies, with shorter sections on rum, gin, agave spirits, vodka, liqueurs, aperitifs, amari, and bitters. It's a wonderful reference.

My one quibble is with Amazon's packaging: the book came in a recyclable, lightly padded envelope, and one corner of the spine was crushed. The damage is not so bad that I wanted to bother to ask for an exchange, but this is something that buyers should keep in mind.

Clearly, I'm not the intended target market here. I miss the Spirit Journal, and thought (in their day) the first Kindred Spirits editions were additions to the spirits world. This 630 page volume spends less than 100 pages on Scotch; and most of that is a scattered coverage of only a tiny fraction of what is and has been out there. Not even a mention of Brora? 12 Glenmorangie's, 10 Dewars, 9 Johnnie Walker's; 3 Laphroiag's and 2 PC's.
So many pages devoted to cocktails - again, I'm not the target, obviously.
I miss the more focussed, comprehensive and timely coverage of the Scotch/Congac/Armagnac world.

If you want to know about anything made in a distillery and almost every single brand and great descriptions and recs, this is your guide. Well written. You may want to take this book to your liquor store so you can cross reference what you find.
