Well I shouldn't say 'disappointing" because I didn't have high expectations of the outcome. I liked JLT in Rainbow and Deep Purple very much, but I didn't give much attention to his solo career. So I've decided to try this album and the Usual Suspect (that has not arrived yet).
Listening to the album, I couldn't find something thrilling in it. Yes JLT has a great voice and he actually has improved (or maybe got more confident with his tool). Either way there was no common theme in this album. Each song is just an idea of its own with different style and production. Like a bunch of session collections. Then getting into title 6, suddenly I heard something familiar - Strokes of Midnight, which originally was written while in Deep Purple for what later became One Man's Meet in the Battle Rages On album (which is sung by Ian Gillan). This version is actually nice, and I wish the entire album would have been made with that kind of sound and style... I think JLT's choices of musicians is what make him or break him (which is probably true for any artists). I mean he could be brilliant (like with Rainbow and DP) or just another rocker who may be going unnoticed.
JLT has a great voice and he needs someone brilliant like Ritchie Blackmore to put him at the top, lead him and push him to use his voice in a more melodic way - where he belongs (and of course it won't hurt to have some more brilliantly made guitar riffs that only Blackmore can come up with - like this one in the Stoke of Midnight aka One Man's Meet). If you listen to both versions of this song, you can hear the difference in performance (I mean of course it's Gillan on the DP album) but the music is played much, much better. No comparison there...

This is a great cd and it was quite cheap from Amazon! Joe Lynn Turner is a good vocalist. A singer is only as good as the material they have to work with. I agree with a previous review about turner that he probably is better with a good band instead of solo efforts as he seems to obtain better material with a solid group behind him. As I stated this record is a solid effort. Joe Lynn Turner is only as good as the material he has to work with so his solo efforts are hit and miss.

Better then the last release. Contains a track that was supposed to be on the follow up to "Slaves & Masters" and ended up on "Battle Rages On" in a different arrangement. Here we get to see what it would have been like with Turner on vocals....minus Blackmore.

This is Turner's 10th solo album to date. Don't let the number scare you. When his last project 'Sunstorm' hit the store shelves in late 2006, fans like myself, were not only pleasantly surprised at the outcome of that recording, but we also encouraged Turner to release more material like this.
So, as a result is the release of this CD. Sure for some fans, it may not be "completely" like his 9th solo effort 'The Usual Suspects' (released in early 2005) which was more hard-edged like 'JLT' (2003) or 'Slam' (2001), but for most of us who are still trying to discover 'great' music, but cannot hear it on a mainstream radio station; Turner's CD provides just the answer for anyone who chooses to buy this CD and listen to it, in its entirety.
One thing you can always count on with Turner is his strong vocal prowess. He is able to carry you through this sort of 'musical journey', as I call it, because of the array of varied material he records for these solo efforts that will surely make any longtime fan or NEW one for that matter, want to HEAR MORE from this legendary artist.
Nevertheless, for all those ney-sayers out there; tracks like "Second Hand Life", "Stroke of Midnight", and "Cruel" for example, just as easily could have made it on 'The Usual Suspects' as well.
Two of the most noteable tracks on this CD are "Your Love Is Life" and my personal favorite, "Blood Red Sky". From the guitar intro, to the driving drum pattern, to the arabian style melody - this track is definitely the 'highlight' of this CD. However with that said, let's not forget the ballad "In Your Eyes" or other tracks like "Got Me Where You Want Me" or "Two Lights". All these tracks are different in their musical style and approach. Like I said before, this CD contains something for EVERYBODY!
Check it out.

What Joe Lynn Turner does best is AOR rock with touches of metal and blues mixed in, and Second Hand Life delivers exactly that. I've been a fan since he was in Rainbow, but hadn't bought an album since Rescue You. I've heard individual songs, but this was the first full album I've listened to since then and he hasn't missed a beat. JLT sounds as good as ever and continues to work with other great musicians/songwriters like; Jim Peterik, Jack Ponti and the "reunion" with Ritchie Blackmore and Roger Glover has me salivating at the thought of a true Rainbow reunion.
The songs themselves cover all the bases from rockers to ballads and highlights include: Got Me Where You Want Me(a moody and bluesy tune), Second Hand Life(a riffy rocker), In Your Eyes(a very nice ballad), Stroke Of Midnight(Blackmore, Glover collaberation), Two Lights and Freedom's Wings(a couple of mid-tempo songs).
Overall, Second Hand Life is a very good piece of melodic/AOR rock and reminded me of just how good Joe Lynn Turner can be.

Ok,I'm not sure whether this is hard rock, soft metal, classic rock or melodic rock. But whatever you wish to term it,there are few vocalists that can take you there as well as JLT can.Whether it is with Rainbow,Yngwie J Malmsteen,Sunstorm,or whatever incarnation that he chooses to release his latest music in,JLT delivers. If you are a fan of good old rock'n'roll, you could do a lot worse than JLT. Also,be sure to check out Sunstorm if possible. You'll be glad that you did.

Joe Lynn Turner has not released anything I didn't think was amazing. This guy can sing!! I have tried my best to find everything Turner has put his voice on because he is that good. If you love hard rock with melodic songs this is your man. Joe sings circles around most rock singers of any era.

So klingt Turner solo! KAUFEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JLT to the fore post-Rainbow
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 9, 2014
Joe was the third of four vocalists with Rainbow and it is easy to criticise the fairly formulaic approach to the Rainbow songs and music of that era. However on this JLT really shines - yes there are naturally similarities to Purple and Rainbow styles/songs but he really lets it rip and for once can be really heard. And the backing music is not just a wall of smoothness. Thoroughly recommend for those who have heard JLT-era Rainbow or Deep Purple and thought it could be better - now it is!
