Here's everything you need to know about Designated Survivor season four.

Designated Survivor season 4 release date: When will it air?

It's bad news, friends. Designated Survivor has officially been cancelled.

Many were hopeful that the series would keep on rolling after Netflix saved the show following ABC's decision to can it. But if the show does return, someone will need to rescue it from the TV graveyard once again.

"We are proud to have offered fans a third season of Designated Survivor, and will continue to carry all three seasons for years to come," said Netflix in a statement.

"We're especially thankful to star and executive producer Kiefer Sutherland, who brought passion, dedication and an unforgettable performance as President Kirkman.

"We're also grateful to showrunner/executive producer Neal Bear for his guiding vision and steady hand, creator/executive producer David Guggenheim and EPs Mark Gordon, Suzan Bymel, Simon Kinberg, Aditya Sood and Peter Noah along with the cast and crew who crafted a compelling and satisfying final season."

Sutherland also shared a video on social media in which he spoke fondly of the show: "I wanted to take a moment to thank everybody for their incredible support with Designated Survivor. The third season is the final season. You guys have just been amazing. It was an honour to play Tom Kirkman and thank you so much for supporting it through the three seasons we got to do. All my love thanks a lot."

During an interview with Simon Mayo on Scala Radio shortly before it was cancelled, Sutherland said that he wasn't hopeful the show would return for one big reason: "I don't think [season 4] is going to happen.

"We had an amazing experience with Netflix and a kind of freedom that was wonderful. But the reality is, because the contracts were so complicated and different from network television to Netflix, they didn't book a lot of the actors who were on the show and they took other jobs. I don't blame them for a second for that.

"So I think doing a season four would be very complicated and difficult...I think it's time for all of us to go and find something new to do."

Netflix has neither confirmed nor denied those comments about contracts.

Deadline also reported that Netflix and studio Entertainment One only struck one-year deals with the cast, which would have meant that their contracts were up at the end of season three.

According to the publication, Kal Penn (Seth Wright) had already committed to other projects.

Designated Survivor season 4 cast: Who's returning?

At the end of season three, sitting president Tom Kirkman was re-elected, but whether Kiefer Sutherland would return if the series was saved for a second time remains to be seen.

And the same goes for the rest of the cast: Aaron (Adan Canto), Isabel (Elena Tovar), Penny (McKenna Grace), Mars (Anthony Edwards), Sasha (Jamie Clayton), and Dontae (Benjamin Charles Watson).

Emily (Italia Ricci) had an emotional end to season three, horrified by the dark secrets unearthed during the presidential campaign, eventually walking out of the election celebrations in tears. That could technically be the end of her story, but it also leaves space for her to walk back into a brand new season, should such a thing arise.

There's also Tom's son Leo (Tanner Buchanan), who didn't appear in season three as he was studying at Stanford University. He too, could feature.

Lorraine (Julie White) was arrested by the FBI, so that could rule her out. As stated previously, we know that Kal Penn (Seth) has committed to other projects, which leaves his position in doubt, too.

Designated Survivor season 4 plot: What will happen?

Frustratingly, there are loads and loads of questions that we don't have answers to following the season three finale, the biggest being: Will Emily return to her role, will Isabel tell Aaron she's having his baby and, more pressingly, is the bio-threat over?

We've mulled over the biggest Designated Survivor plot threads left hanging that need to be tackled in season four. Whether we will get those all-important answers, however, remains to be seen.
