Having first disembarked upon Britain's windswept shores in 1973, Iowa-born writer Bill Bryson spent the best part of two decades living among the inhabitants of our small, often charming and occasionally exasperating island.
In 1998, inspired by his best-selling book Notes from a Small Island, Bill returned to his adopted country for a humorous and affectionate television safari conducted over six episodes. This series saw him journeying from Dover to John O'Groats while trying to explain what it was that first attracted him to this land of rain, sweet tea and disagreeable landladies.
Between hailing a London cab driven by Stephen Fry, analysing Scouse humour with Alexei Sayle and conversing with Victoria Wood in a Bournemouth beach hut, Bill puts it all into perspective taking in blue plaques, ballroom dancers, fell runners, cable tossers and churches called St Andrew-by-the-Wardrobe along the way...

I have to give this 3 stars just because somebody took the trouble to make the dvd and Amazon still sells it. I have enjoyed reading the book, Notes from a Small Island, several times and will probably read it again. I probably will not watch the video again because the sound quality is so poor it seems as if everyone is mumbling. The visuals are not outstanding so do not compensate for the bad audio. Subtitles might have helped. One other observation: on camera, Bill Bryson is more soft spoken and gentle seeming than his books led me to expect. He often takes an irritable, curmudgeonly but humorous, tone in his writing; not very tolerant of human failings to say the least.
I love Bill Bryson - I would marry him. Was very dissapointed that this DVD cut off halfway through and wouldnt work. i didnt realise that I had ordered a second hand one, Never again.
I have been a fan of Mr Bryson for many years, and the first book I read was Notes from a Small Island so, needless to say, I was very excited to watch the film. And I wasn't disappointed, it was fantastic, loved the interviews, the sceneries, and the man itself!
Having read the book all those years ago and being an avid fan of Mr Bryson (read a walk in the woods without laughing your head off) I was delighted to watch the tv version of it. Thanks to Amazon for a very enjoyable couple of hours with one of my favourite authors.
Bill Bryson is very good in a dry sort of way in seeing us how a lot of Americans must see us, Surprising hearing how people from the USA view our quaint ways
