Mani Neumeier brings back the Guru Guru label, but with new band members and a completely different sound. Kind of like "New Coke," it just isn't the same. Initial listens are likely to induce feelings of betrayal and disgust, and for a long time I was dismissive of this album. But slowly over the years I've found that it has its own charms. Tango Fango is celebratory Latin-tinged fusion, produced by the great Conny Plank. And just to give you a brief glimpse of the quirky past, the album ends with a bizarre radio play about German reunification.

The quality of material on Tango Fango is starting to slip, a little. A bit of a letdown, but not totally a waste of time.

An average Guru Guru long play is still pretty damn good compared to the other krautrock jazz rock in nineteen seventy six.

RIP Conny Plank
RIP Ingo Bischof

The reformed Guru Guru surprise with compact song structures and pregnant Latin and Jazz influences on this slightly underrated album. "Das lebendige Radio" is more a satirical radio play than a song. It's not possible to define a primary genre for this release...
