My 5 friends and I booked the 2D/1N Short Inca trail with Alpaca Expeditions in mid-May. My friends are experienced hikers. I am not and was worried about the whole thing. There was no reason to. Our guide, Lucio, and the whole team walked us through the entire experience in the days leading up to the excursion. The hike itself was lovely and went off without a hitch.
Lucio has more than a decade of experience walking this trail (and all the others). You should definitely ask for him. We met with him the night before where he described the trail and the schedule. On the day of, he came to pick us up at our hotel(s) and we drove to have some breakfast and get the train towards Machu Picchu. We got off a bit before the final stop, at the base of the trail.
The trail starts in some ruins of a small village. Lucio shared some history and a preview of what was to come. He always had cool tidbits about the Inca and the people that used the path we were hiking.
The hike itself was tiring for me, as a beginner. My friends weren't all that bothered. YMMV. About 5 kms in, we stopped for lunch. The Alpaca Expedition team has a nice base right off the trail where they can take a break and/or cook. We stopped for an hour or so, ate some delicious food, packed up, and set off again.
It took another 5 kms or so to get to the Sun Gate and then Machu Picchu. This half of the trail had a few steeper climbs, but the food carried us! It was all worth it once we saw the city from the Sun Gate. We were lucky to have beautiful, sunny weather.
After viewing Machu Picchu from above (nice viewpoint only available to hikers), we exited the area and took a bus back down to the valley. The Alpaca Expeditions team had set up camp for us in this little property off the road. Tents were ready for us with all our stuff waiting for us. We showered and changed into clean clothes and sat for dinner. We had a lovely dinner, with Lucio sharing more stories.
The tents were great and sleep was comfortable, but a property nearby had roosters that would not stop crowing. Lucio had ear plugs for us (or bring your own). Use them!
The next day, we took the bus back up to Machu Picchu and visited the city itself. Again, Lucio had all the information we could've ever asked for, very-well informed. There were more great views from the path we had access to as hikers (can't remember #). Definitely worth it vs. showing up as a regular visitor.
After our visit, we bused back down to the local town, walked around, had lunch, and then took train back to Ollantaytambo where our pick-up was waiting to bring us back to Cusco.
We had a lovely time and I can't recommend it enough!
Shout-out also to the team that took care of us (carrying our gear, setting up camp, cooking, etc.) during our 2 days: Noemie, Florencia, Rostendo. Thank you so much!
