Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 3-- Once again, Paxton has combined talents with Rayevsky to create a visually arresting and harmonious offering. The structure of this collection is similar to their earlier efforts, but whereas Belling the Cat and Other Aesop's Fables (1990) had a distinctly Old West appearance, this work, with its several Roman and medieval costumes, harkens back to Aesop's Fables (1988, both Morrow). Androcles and the Lion contains ten fables told only as Paxton can tell them--in lilting, insightful verse. "The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing," "The Bald Knight," "The Tree and the Reed," and "The Man, the Boy, and the Donkey" are included. Rayevsky's stylized illustrations are executed in pen-and-ink with watercolor washes. Often depicted in profile, his human and animal characters possess vitality and verve. One welcome and offbeat selection is "The Wolf and the Crane," which Rayevsky illustrates as a contemporary cautionary tale set against the New York skyline. This updating of Aesop is very effective, and readers can only hope this author/artist combo will consider yet another collaboration continuing this urban theme. Excellent for sharing aloud, these are compelling and always entertaining interpretations of classic fables. --Denise Anton Wright, Library Book Selection Service, Inc., Bloomington, IL

From Kirkus Reviews

With nine more tales, the third collection of Aesop from this duo. Folksinger Paxton's retellings continue to be pungent and amusing, though he's prone to awkward phrasing in aid of his self-imposed verse forms. But Rayevsky's vigorous, satirical illustrations are still outstanding; and as a dividend--in a sly reminder that these stories are universal--he costumes his characters chronologically, from a Roman Androcles to a mischievous wolf wearing untied high-tops and listening to a boom box.
