St. Lawrence runs one of the oldest first-year programs in the country, where freshman take a speaking, writing and research-intensive course with their dormmates during their first semester. St. Lawrence has a small but active Greek life, consisting of two fraternities and four sororities. In addition, there are opportunities to live in one of 14 Theme Houses, which are coeducational living communities chosen by students with similar interests. Students interested in extracurricular activities can choose from more than 100 student groups. The St. Lawrence Saints are members of the Liberty League in the NCAA Division III, and the school also has Division I hockey teams that compete in the ECAC Hockey conference. The university fields 32 varsity sports and more than 25 club and intramural teams, with 96 percent of the student body participating in athletic activities.

The campus is close to the Adirondack Mountains, which offers students the opportunity to leave campus on personal and school-sponsored trips.The Java Barn, a student-run music venue on campus, hosts free concerts, open-mic events and festivals for the student body. Notable alumni of the university include Jeffery H. Boyd, chairman of Priceline.com; U.S. Sen. Susan Collins of Maine; and actor Viggo Mortensen.
