Flunked and Fumbled
The appeal alludes me of these generic college-sports rom-coms that began popping up in the 1920s. "Brown of Harvard" (1926), "The Fair Co-Ed," "West Point" (both 1927), for examples, and this, "The Plastic Age." It's no wonder comedians Harold Lloyd ("The Freshman" (1925)) and Buster Keaton ("College" (1927)) were quick to parody them. I'm not sure when exactly the genre got going, although this one is based on a book; regardless, I suppose it's a confluence of universities, sports, and cinema all coming of age in the Roaring Twenties, along with Prohibition and the emergence of the Flapper. Promising-enough material all gone to waste in this case.

Gilbert Roland is definitely the male lead, at least in my opinion. Donald Keith is not star material, and a bit of a wet blanket in terms of that leading man charisma. Gilbert Roland is handsome and magnetic, and this is only his first credited role!
This started off fun, but the last 30 minutes are a slog. Needed more Clara Bow and Gilbert Roland.

I wasn’t expecting much out of The Plastic Age, and it’s pretty fairly average, but the main problem is the protagonist is so annoying! I did not care about Hugh at all. The movie really crumbles towards the end and we don’t get to see any real growth from any of the characters, but near the end we have to figure out the “growth” of these characters for the ending to make sense.
This needed a lot more Clara Bow.

A studious, awkward student catches the heart of the party girl, but their differences cause a rift. As much as I adore Clara Bow with my entire heart, so many of the films she did were so mediocre and barely showed her skills off! This was entirely forgettable, with Bow easily being the best part. I will never understand America’s obsession with football.
"The Plastic Age" was at the forefront of a tried and true Hollywood cliché. That is that everything will be right in the world if our team can just make that last point and win the big game. That is a tradition that has carried on annoyingly for a century.

I knew there was a reason behind it taking me more than a month to finish watching this, turns out The Plastic Age is a whole mess of a film that doesn’t invest much on you caring about the characters. A weird portrait of youth that had everything to be ahead of its time, but ended up conventional and dull.

The Plastic Age - a 20s euphemism for youth (youth-phemism?) - reunites the leads of the hopeless Parisian Love to altogether more successful ends: Donald Keith is a naive fresher who heads to college dreaming of track glory, but is sidetracked by a goal of another sort, in the shapely shape of Bow.
Keith is OK as the clean-cut hero, but it's Bow's show all the way, another example of her unique talent, in a role that asks her to be flirty, flighty and real. Her character - a terrifyingly seductive flapper reformed in the face of goodness - enters every scene either…

It's funny to see how many tropes from over 90 years ago haven't changed much. It's no wonder many college comedies seem tired. This one also has a lot of sports, so if you're watching to see the film that made Clara Bow a star, it's a lot to sit through. Clara Bow is great, but I think I may owe Get Your Man an apology because this film desperately needs more Clara Bow. I suppose I should be glad it gave her the exposure to become a lead. I just couldn't care about the bland lead's sports-life balance, which is essentially the plot. Dude didn't even have a job!

Really pleasant and easy to watch. It's a slight movie and doesn't do anything too new or different, even by 1925 standards, but it does what it does pretty well. It's a college romantic comedy that ends up turning a bit dramatic towards the end. It's rarely laugh-out-loud funny but it's got plenty of sensible chuckle moments and it's never boring.
Where it really shines and probably the only reason anyone is going to watch it these days is the casting of Clara Bow. This is the film that launched her to stardom and you can totally see why it did. The whole movie just lights up whenever she is on screen. Her performance is so above everyone else's. Just…
