2022 GMC Canyon review: Our expert's take

What Is the 2022 GMC Canyon?

The GMC Canyon is a mid-size pickup truck that seats up to five and is available in extended- or crew-cab form. It comes standard with a 200-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine; a 308-hp, 3.6-liter V-6 gas engine and a 181-hp, turbo-diesel 2.8-liter four-cylinder are also offered. The four-cylinder engines pair with a six-speed automatic transmission, and the V-6 comes with an eight-speed automatic. The Canyon is available with rear- or four-wheel drive.

Competitors include the Nissan Frontier, Ford Ranger and Toyota Tacoma. The Canyon is a mechanical twin of the Chevrolet Colorado

What’s New on the 2022 GMC Canyon?

GMC has added a Denali Black Edition that consists of upgrades including gloss-black exhaust tips, 20-inch low-gloss-black alloy wheels, black assist steps and all-weather floormats.

What Features in the 2022 GMC Canyon Are Most Important?

Standard features include:

  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity

Available features include:

  • Remote start

Should I Buy the 2022 GMC Canyon?

The Canyon’s available V-6 engine is powerful, while the available turbo-diesel uncorks the truck’s top towing capacity and provides the best EPA-estimated gas mileage. The Canyon’s cabin is quiet on the highway, too. Unfortunately, a number of other aspects of the driving experience disappoint: Brake pedal feel is poor and the ride is too stiff. The seats aren’t all that comfortable, either.

Diesel AT4 it!

GMC Diesel Canyon AT4. I've had this truck for a year-11,000 miles. I love it. The Denali and Elevation trim looked like junk. The AT4 can't compete with the Tacoma off road but, It holds it's own off road. The Diesel pulls like a beast and the exhuast brake, on all the moutain passes I drive, is worth it's wieght in Gold. I trailer the max. capacity regularly and it's smooth sailing. I traded in my 2500HD Silverado with the vortec 6.0 for this big, little truck. Best decision I've made in a while. I had this truck on order for 8 months and Gm never accepted the order. I finally found exactly what I ordered, just off the truck that morning that I called. 1300 miles away, I jumped on a plane to go get it. Crying shame GMC discontinued the diesel. The extra $ per gallon right now is easily washed by the increase in mileage, 32+ higway, 19 trallering almost 8000 #'s. I wouldn't want the truck without it. Wouldn't want the Elevation or Denali. Diesel AT4 is the truck. I'll keep it the rest of my life barring accident. I'm sure I can get 40 years out of this truck doing 10-12k a year. The regeneration of the exhaust has never come up but, I only do a little round town driving. Most of my miles are highway and hauling a load. I've heard horror stories about regen. from city folk, commuters... You get what you aim for. If you've given it a lot of thought and the diesel AT4 seems right for you, you won't be disappointed. Good luck finding one. GM - You've a winner here. don't let it get away. Ps. Cars.com doesn't have a choice of how I use this truck for WORK. And wouldn't let me submit this review without selecting one of thier 3 inadequate choices. So, I selected having fun cause I believe everything should be but, this is my WORK TRUCK!

2022 GMC Canyon Elevation= AWESOME!!

I love my 2022 GMC Canyon Elevation. The V6 engine is great. Good gas mileage, even for the way I drive it! Great comfort and very stylish. All around, just a great truck.

2022 GMC Canyon 4x4 - love it after one month

I purchased my new GMC Canyon Elevation 4x4 Crew Cab a month ago and it's been a pleasure to drive to this point. I think it rides very well for a truck which disagrees with the Cars.com review. It has plenty of power with the V6 and 8-speed transmission for passing. I have yet to tow with it but that's coming next month when I tow a flat bed trailer with 2 ATV's on it. I love the 18" tires and blacked out wheels which gives it a much higher stance than my old 2010 Colorado 4x4. The truck stands very tall for a mid-size model and it gives me a great view of the road behind the wheel. I love the Infotainment system with Sirus XM, Spotify, etc. The soft-lowering tailgate is nice and so is the auto-locking feature. It doesn't have standard features such as lane departure, blind spot warning, adaptive cruise control, etc. My wife's Subaru Forester came standard with those features whereas the Canyon has them as an add-on option. Not a deal breaker. The lack of decent rubber all-weather floor mats were a disappointment so I had to order them along with splash guards. I'm not sure about the Goodyear Fortitude tires in the winter since the reviews don't rate them well in deep snow. If I have to, I will install 4 snow tires. So far I love the truck and I love the Satin Steel color. It's a major upgrade from my 2010 Colorado 4x4. It's a bit early but I would definitely recommend this truck to a prospective buyer.
