Wrong version, here is the best: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4pYANUAJAI

Her phrasing makes me uncomfortable. It's like she's almost rhythmic, but not quite.

My take is that it’s skillful and intentional. She’s adding some flavor to it after having had to sing that song thousands of times.

Although this was undoubtedly a lip-synch.

It definitely was. No wireless mics that small that long ago, then, no overhead boom, or wired mic like Bob Barker had.

She’s doing Cher.

She’s doing Cher.

That, and the parts where she's just standing totally still. Very much vibes of the Fembots from Austin Powers.

She was 38 here. What a fox.

Wow, she easily looked like she was in her early 20s, great genes.

huh. she is 92

She's the first woman I gave myself a low five to so this makes me feel old.

I still pleasure myself to Barbara Eden - the current version. Will explore that with my therapist this week.

in the sixties? you ARE old

u/kaizencraft avatar

They were reruns, I swear!

Jesus...I meant then, jackass

u/pookshuman avatar

easy tiger, I meant "huh" like, "isn't that interesting" after I looked it up on wikipedia ... shift into a lower gear

u/andrewf25 avatar

You can do what you like, but you shouldn't be surprised if someone, in this case me, responds to an ambiguous comment the meaning of which was known only to you. And i suppose i could have looked at your comment and thought to myself "what is this jackass on about?" instead of responding to the comment. But where is the fun in that?

u/pookshuman avatar

you could have just asked

YOU sound like a jackass. Someone who jumps to conclusions and throws a hissy fit over random nothings.

Not quite the same range as Dusty Springfield.

Dusty Springfield has the best version. A very nice version is the one Joss Stone did here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBH8o8XXnVM

Springfield’s version is perfection. Her emotion conveys mischief, like telling a dirty secret. To play it up as a vocal performance misses the point. It’s supposed to be a confession, rather an act for an audience.

TIL Dusty Springfield is a woman.

I've never heard of Joss Stone but after listening to her cover here, I need more. Fuck was that good! Thanks for sharing!

"The Soul Session" was her first album at age 16. It's covers of soul songs from the 60s and 70s. I remember listening to it when it came out and being amazed this 16 year old kid was singing on par with the greats, like Aretha Franklin.

Great album, and I did a triple take when I learned she was British, born in Dover. Coulda fooled me if someone told me she was raised in Georgia.

Kinda like how the Beatles and Rolling Stones transcended accents (sometimes).

This performance perfectly encapsulates just how creepy the lyrics are.

This plays better with the sound muted.

The kick & head-nod combo at 2:05 with the GoGo boots just sends me back, I love it

Random fact. Barbara Eden is a descendant of Benjamin Franklin through his daughter.

Given that her surname is Eden, it's a fairly safe bet she's a descendent of Adam as well.

She can’t sing or dance lol

u/Anacalagon avatar

First time I have really heard her Texas accent. Also you can't tell me that girl wasn't a sinner.

What an awful song

The world was stupid as fuck before 1992.

Coincidentally reddit comments after the date you joined are stupid as fuck lol.

u/hazyhmoon avatar

Maybe he was born in 1992 which explains his parents behavior in 1991

Its still quite stupid.

OMG it's so white it feels racist. It makes me feel ashamed of my European heritage.

I never want to hear that again I have to go listen to the other version 500 times to wash that out of my head.

I may pop my ear drums and gouge my eyes out.

Don't watch it.

Have a nice day.
