      Critics Consensus

Robbed of its integral LGBTQ themes, 54 is a compromised and disjointed glance at the glory days of disco.

Alexandra Heller-Nicholas The Blue Lenses The director's cut of 54 is a remarkable artefact that tells us as much about the 1990s as it does the 1970s. Aug 25, 2018 Full Review Emanuel Levy Variety A more critical and resonant Hollywood movie about the glorious disco culture screams to be made. Jun 18, 2008 Full Review Charlotte O'Sullivan Time Out Myers exploits every vicious, self-hating line that comes his way. Jan 26, 2006 Full Review Alexander Ryll Gay Essential The studio that released the film Miramax, ordered 40 minutes removed from the film and 30 minutes worth of reshoots. Rated: 2.5/4 Apr 10, 2018 Full Review Ray Pride Newcity The most affecting moments are shards of sexual behavior... that existed only on the samizdat VHS, the degraded quality suggesting ghostly remnants of film's scissoring [and] the long-dead behaviors on-screen, debauchery and gaucherie alike. steve d Nothing is going on here, even with this great cast. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review s r I saw it a long time ago for my interest in the famous Club 54, but it was forgettable for the most part. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member It's not as bad as the ratings indicate. But, it is a mostly empty story about degenerate, selfish douchebags. That said, it's a good cast and the story moves along at a good pace. At least it isn't boring, but I still can't recommend it Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/05/19 Full Review Read all reviews
