Is there any way to play java with a friend without a server?
Ive looked for a good hour or two for answers on this topic but I cant find anything, All I get is either the open to LAN or to make a server, in the past I was able to play with an old friend without being on the same internet connection but at this point it seems that youre being forced to purchase a server in order to play with friends on java, does anyone know how to fix this issue? I only wanna play with one other person anyway and I hate how its this difficult to do so

Yeah I'm calling BS on this. It would have taken literally 5 seconds and not a single second more to find the answer to that.
and you have NEVER been able to play multiplayer on Java without a server. Not once in the games entire existence. What you played was probably Bedrock or Console.
You can't even play Java single player without a server since there's always one running. That's why it says "open to LAN". The server's already there it just doesn't let people in. Can even severely get the tickrates out-of-sync.
But hosting a non-internal one isn't diffucult either way. Just grab the server.jar off the official site (or a modified one) and run it. Can run it on the same PC you're playing on too. Nothing's forcing you to pay anything here.
Java has always required a server since pre-beta. I've never heard of it being multiplayer other than LAN, ever. I know the consoles bedrock version all you have to be is friends through the Microsoft link, and who ever owns the world has to be logged in.
You can get a free server on a website called aternos. You do get ads on the site but the servers are good and functional.
The only downsides are that it takes 1-3 minutes to boot up the server and you have to manually turn the server on every time you want to play on it.
There's this mod called ESSENTIAL that lets you host your single player world for friends to join. You both need to have the mod installed obv

Java always required a server. You can host them free. That can be on your own computer or a host that offers services for free. If you have good Internet and a good PC that will probably be more effective than most free services, but also more difficult to set up.
Use the "Open to LAN" option with the port forwarded from your router to your PC.
If that doesn't make sense then you're probably better off using something like aternos.
Let me just add my kudos for the Essential Mod that people have already mentioned. It’s an incredible mod and makes multiplayer with a small number of friends seamless. You just need everyone to have the mod running on their installations.
