The truth isn’t always what it seems.
Lia doesn’t realize that, but she will. Soon.
I chose this life. This road. This twisted arrangement.
For her, I made a deal with the devil.
For her, I toyed with fate and death.
There’s no going back.
I stole her and like any thief, I won’t return her.
Lia is my addiction. My obsession. My love.
Mine.
This book is the final part of a trilogy and is not standalone.

Adrian is first introduced in Rai's bks & we meet Lia a bit in that bk. At the end of Rai's bks Lia comes to Rai & asked her to help her run from Adrian so Rai hides her at a safe house. Jeremy who is Adrian/Lia son is mentioned in Rai's bk. Reina&Rai are twins. Reina's (All The Lies/ All the Truths ) & Rai's ( Thorne of Power/ Thorne Of Vengeance ) & all the Royal Elite ( havent read Seb/Naomi books (Red Thorn/Black Thorn ) yet but they seemed to be more of a side story) I did decide to read Adrian/Lia story as their children are important to the Legacy Of Gods Series which starts w/ God Of Malice which deals w/ the books mentioned above & Rina Kents Royal Elite Bks (7 bks ) characters childrens. I also suggest reading the Empire of Desire books which tie both Royal Elite & Reina/Rai/ Adrian's story into it.
SPOILERS BELOW
"One day, she’ll realize that the world we live in doesn’t matter. We’re the only ones who do."
Adrian (MMC)(36) & Lia (FMC)
Jeremy (God of Wrath)
Annika (God of Pain)
Lia is a hard character to like & has massive mental health issues. The only reason i finished reading A&Ls story after originally DNFing is for Jeremy. Jeremy/Cecily(Xander/Kims Daughter- REs Black Knight Bk ).
BK 2 ends w/ fmc jumping off a cliff. BK 3 prologues in the past when MMC is 10. His Mom leaves in the middle of the night with him. Dad catches up & you find out Mom meet with Italian Capos & was trying to overthrow the Bratva so Dad could lead. She betrayed the Brotherhood so Dad had Adrian watch him shot her at point blank range. “This is how you punish traitors, no matter how close they are to you.” (His dad ends up
dying bc he jumped infront of Nikolai during an assassination attempt)
Then bk jumps to the cliff scene MMC (36yo) jumps down to save Lia who is trapped between rocks. She has a stomach injury (now similar to Winters c-section scars) . At this point they've been married for 6 yrs. When Lia wakes up she is dissociating & thinks she's Winter. Honestly it has similarities to Reina/Asher storyline. She woke up not remembering him & is scared of him & hes told she needs to remember who she is on her terms. MMC is still hurting bc Lia told him she "cheated" & this along w/ everything pushed both FMC & MMC to act out in a suffocating manner. So MMC decides to let Lia think she's Winter. He also
has Yan disguised as a homeless person(Larry)& has Lia go to a homeless shelter thats associated with the Bratva. 1 month time jump Winter is still in a coma. Lia is still homeless & hanging with Yan. Yan tells Mmc about Richard (shelter director) trying to make a move on Lia. (This happens in Bk1 ) so Adrian killed him. Then it jumps 4 weeks later where Lia remembers she Lia (end of bk1) (she had been Winter for 2 months at that point) This all happens within the first 30 pages of the bk. Luca is in the alley after the distraction at the park/circus from end of bk 2. She realizes Luca was using her. Luca kisses her as Adrian shows up & he runs. Lia stops MMC from going after luca bc she knows he will try to kill MMC. Lia finally submits to MMC. Lia uses jeremy as a way to get MMC to comply & Koyla tells Lia that wasnt a good idea bc his mother used MMC against his father. Lia goes & talks to Yan to piece some of her memories together. He tells her about Richards death & how Sergei/Igor are gunning it for Adrian but dont have proof about Richard. You also find out MMC has been following Lia for months & the people he killed in the parking garage were coming for Lia. He also killed anyone Italians who knew of Lia existence. Lia also goes up & sees Winter in a coma but later you find out she isnt. She just acted like that bc MMC threatened to torture her for answers so she faked being in a coma. Lia also realizes Ryan was killed for hurting her. Finally she actually realizes she's a Masochist & Adrian is a Sadist. Lia starts to see her therapist again. She isnt having nightmares & shes more talkative instead of turning inward with her illness. They go on vacation to Russia where Jeremy ask for a baby sister. Lia still hasn't told Adrian everything about Luca & all the things she did in the past. She should of bc Sergei tells Adrian to come back bc Vlad has some evidence about Richard's death. Betrayal = death. So MMC leaves Lia &Jer in Russia to go back. He also tells Koyla he needs to find Luca & kill him after MMC death. Luca is mostly a Rozettis (rival Italian mafia against Lia fathers mafia group). A guard told them Lia was the Rozettis trump card over Lazlo since he is "heirless". They kidnapped Lia's mom & married her off to her stepdad who was a Rozettis. Then shipped her off to her gma who isnt her gma & pretended to be her gma. Then planted Luca there to watch her. Lia decides
The narrative of this trilogy is really pure brilliance- the different time periods, the different identities and psychological phases, the slow unfurling of the past to help us better understand the present, the meticulous and intricate weaving of all of the different themes and secrets, all the deception and mystery. The storytelling is spellbinding, but magic has been so artfully and delicately composed. Every little piece of this story, every moment, every detail, every character served an all important and meaningful purpose- one that beautifully comes together in this breathtaking conclusion. We get more questions, but we also finally get all the answers, including the most important one of all- just how Adrian and Lia move forward from a past so corrupted and broken, and from a present to chaotically muddled.
What I love most about this series is how psychological it is- this is truly a story about the psyche of love and identity. We’ve spent two books understanding who these characters are in the past and present, cracking into their hearts as much as we are cracking into their minds. They are mesmerizing in every way, but well and truly broken. At an impasse that feels impossible - and both have copeds in ways that have been toxic and destructive to their fragile relationship. We’ve watched barriers internal and external come between them, and we’ve also watched it break them both down. Both characters have experienced pain and trauma at the hands of others, but they’ve also experienced it at the ends of each other. And that is the baggage they must confront. The story is so deliciously meta- the trilogy a beautiful articulation of the evolution of not only a beautifully broken love story but that of two people coming into their true selves- two people self-actualizing out of complicated emotions about and for each other. And my, what a marvelous journey.
Adrian is a villain-truly. Unlike her prior leading men who dabble in some grey, this is a man with truly monstrous tendencies. He’s manipulative, deceptive, controlling, ruthless and corrupt. But, we finally see his heart- his humanity, the breadth of his emotion. Villains can love- and their love is somehow all the more tender, all the mower powerful, all the more earth shattering and epic- but it is not given easily. I could not love this man more- or his thoughtful and moving character journey. How he evolves into a man who sacrifices, who loves selflessly, a man who openly loves and compromises. But the true journey belongs to Lia. And as a woman who started this trilogy as another woman with a totally different identity, what a character arc Rina has given her. We get to see her find her strength, find her power, and we get to see her evolve as a woman who is controlled by others into a woman who writes her own destiny. Who FIGHTS for her own destiny- who fights for her family. A Lia who embraces her true self- a woman who is strong enough to be Adrian’s partner, the monster’s queen.
The chemistry is fire as always- intense, palpably emotional and kinetic, but Rina adds such a powerful dimension to this story that brings such nuance to these two characters’ connection. Because here we get to see how powerful they are when they fight TOGETHER, and when they fight FOR each other. For the last two books, we’ve seen them fight against each other, try to deceive and control and manipulate each other to project their hearts, and now we get to see what happens when their hearts are raw and open. When they choose to lean into their dysfunction.
I am so devastated this story is over, though after the Herculean effort it took for these two to find peace and happiness, I’m relieved the turbulence and chaos have subsided and these two beautiful souls can reap the benefits of their epic journey. I know we’ll be returning to this world again- of course Rina will keep us in suspense about when and with whom, but I’ll take anything we can get, because I am hooked on this world. Hands town this is the best series Rina has ever written (and after Jonathan I’d never thought I’d say that about anything else)- but the Deception series is the perfect marriage of dark romance, intrigue, ansgty, and powerful emotional storytelling. I can not get enough!
the plot was so amazing, i never cried in a dark romance before, it was my first but this book is just so so so good and was hurt every tear, every pain, every burst of anger and every laugh.
