Summary

  • Dark Heart season 2 is not confirmed, and there have been no updates on its return.

  • If a second season is made, main characters like Staffe, Juliette, DI Josie Chancellor, and Sylvie are expected to return.

Dark Heart season 2 is the long-awaited continuation of the British crime drama. In Dark Heart, Detective Inspector Will "Staffe" Wagstaffe (Tom Riley) is a police officer haunted by the unsolved brutal murders of his parents at age 16. While his personal life is a mess thanks to the ghosts of his past, the hard reality of his life also makes him uniquely preoccupied with solving London's most grim and violent cases. Dark Heart had a very unusual release schedule. In 2016, a pilot was shot and released, but it wasn't until late 2017 that the show was commissioned for a series, leading to a partial reshoot of the pilot.

On October 31, 2018, nearly two years after the original pilot was released, Dark Heart premiered on ITV and received a 57% on Rotten Tomatoes. As brutal as the series can be, the original pilot was even more grim and violent, with many changes made in the edit for the second premiere of the show. Like any of the best British cop shows, Dark Heart is an intriguing look at a talented detective whose personal problems threaten to cloud his judgment. While the case in Dark Heart is solved, season 1 does end on a cliffhanger, which makes the lack of information about the series' future a little head-scratching.

Unfortunately, for fans of the series, there have not been any updates regarding Dark Heart season 2, and the series is not confirmed to return. The only mention of what could come next came after season 1 was released. Chris Lang, a writer for the series, responded to a question asking if a second season had been talked about with, "Yeah, of course." (via Express). However, in that same interview, Lang mentioned that nothing is guaranteed about there being a season 2. With the first season ending in 2018, and little in the way of news, Dark Heart season 2 doesn't look like it will be arriving anytime soon.

Without Dark Heart season 2 confirmed, it's not certain who would return for it. Based on the events of season 1, however, there are a few characters who can be expected to reappear. Staffe (Riley) would, of course, come back. He would be joined by his older sister Juliette Wagstaffe (Charlotte Riley), his colleague DI Josie Chancellor (Anjli Mohindra), and his girlfriend Sylvie (Miranda Raison) as they are some of the few characters left alive or at least with their relationship with Staffe intact, and thus able to star in season 2.

Dark Heart Season 2 Story Details

At the end of season 1, the main case of Dark Heart has been solved, so Dark Heart season 2 will need to find a new criminal and crime to explore if it's ever confirmed. However, the major question of who killed Staffe's parents all those years ago remains unanswered and could be explored in future episodes. In fact, at the end of Dark Heart season 1, Juliette calls Staffe from her hospital room and cryptically teases that she knows more about what happened to their parents. If Dark Heart does return, that question will certainly be top of viewers' minds.
