An underrated classic - female-fronted, but nothing like a Siouxsie or Cocteau or Xmal; female Nick Cave comes to mind? I'm not the first to make these comparisons, nor will I be the last. Speaking of which, Cave makes an appearance here. Fans of The Bad Seeds should like this one as it's not too far off from Tender Prey era. It's groovy, heavy at times, harsh, soft and dreamy at others, bluesy, warm, fuzzy, cold... it's a ride into 80's night-time narcosis. It almost feels like the soundtrack to a late-night adult cartoon; but then again, maybe that's just too meta. 4.5/5. Favorites: Still Burning, Done Dun, Three Kings, Fields Of Fire.

A way more melodic thing than I had initially expected - possibly more delicate than any of the acts whose members were involved. Melodic and pretty by Lydia Lunch standards, and lowercase and subdued by Birthday Party and Foetus standards.
Needlesstosay, the result is still dark and dissonant but also incredibly pretty. Songs like "Dead River" are absolutely gorgeous, evocative and heart-wrenching, employing some of the macabre blues tones of the Birthday Party's guitar sound and even some sickly sax. This straddles roughly the same sort of line that From Her to Eternity does. Underrated!
Is it a concept album?

Considering how "cacophonic" this is, in its core, kind of messy, rambling, not even noisy in some "awesome" ways, it holds together really well, and it almost doesn't feel like chore... of going through some art that's not quite enjoyable, but you will stand it for the sake of art. There are some ok no wave dstructures here. The vocal styles are kind of atrocious, and there's way too much of the same things, but to me it still feels somehow nice, dark, and I usually like "shock" elements so while there's no surprises and it's musically not that interesting, it's a great abyss. It's also post-punky and gothic, it's not noise, but it's clearly building some scenes. Even some dark pop psychedelia in a bonus song Some Velvet Morning is a nice oddity, simple catchy gothic American music with kind of interrupted unusual duetto.Published
Honeymoon In Red were a supergroup of sorts, that grew out of Lydia Lunch collaborating with the Birthday Party and Rowland S Howard in particular (Nick Cave only sings on two of the songs). The tapes were unfinished at the time and remixed later by Jim Foetus, with Thurston Moore brought in for some guest guitar.
The Birthday Party were in a transitional period at the time, between Junkyard and The Bad Seed EP. It must have been the time where RSH considered forming a proto version of These Immortal Souls, as songs like Still Burning or the role of Genevieve McGuckin on piano suggest and, yes, Mick Harvey plays the drums. Fans of the Birthday Party, Lydia Lunch and RSH should definitely pick this record up. It captures those involved in strong form, the songs are excellent, but due to its transitional and experimental nature it's not a magnum opus.

This was recorded around 1981/82 with a number of highly prolific guest musicians. The backing band is most of The Birthday Party -- Nick Cave (credited as "Anonymous", "Her Dead Twin" and "A Drunk Cowboy Junkie"), Rowland S. Howard and Tracy Pew. Further guests include Jim Thirlwell (aka Clint Ruin aka Foetus) and Thurston Moore on two tracks. The result is something of a melodic Lydia Lunch album, or a somewhat unmelodic Birthday Party album. Highly abrasive with psychotic bursts, but surprisingly structured (for a Lunch album anyway). "Three Kings" and "Still Burning" could even qualify as rock songs, and "Done Dun" is a first sketch of the direction Cave would follow with the Bad Seeds. Takes some getting used to and is not really music for every mood, but certainly has its moments.
