about

SERRATE was composed in March 1991 and premiered at Direct Box (a short-lived artist-run performance space in W. Chelsea co-directed by E#) and was only performed again nearly two years later. The core members of Carbon (Parkins, Weinstein, Sloan, Trump) were augmented with strings and horns. The ensemble played algorithmic materials derived from Fibonacci sequences and fractal patterns and organized into a matrix defining their actions which included transformations of the composed materials and "pop out" improvisations. Direct Box had marginal sound equipment that had been scrounged together and the recording of that first performance was unusable. Not to say that this recording is pristine: far from it! This album was mastered from a board-tape at the Knitting Factory and some of the sounds had overdriven the inputs on the recording desk. Still, SERRATE is unlikely to be played again anytime soon and this performance manifests all of the fantastic viscerality and intelligence that the musicians involved brought to Carbon in that period.
