The Oracle Speaks: Warren Buffett In His Own Words (In Their Own Words) Paperback – October 30, 2012

From his office in Omaha, Nebraska, without even the benefit of a computer, Warren Buffett has racked up an investment record that far surpasses his counterparts on Wall Street—or anyone else in the world, for that matter. While traditionally stock exchanges have returned about 11 percent annually in the past half century, Buffett's investments have by nearly 29 percent a year, solidifying Buffett's conglomerate holding company, Berkshire Hathaway, as the eighth-largest business in the world and netting him $44 billion along the way.

Despite this tremendous success, “the Oracle of Omaha” remains modest. He acknowledges that he has a unique ability to evaluate businesses, but he doesn’t feel entitled to the vast wealth that ability has earned him. Instead, he likes to say that he was born at the right place and time. This humility in the face of proven talent and innumerable wealth is part of what makes Buffett universally popular—he is one of the world's wealthiest men and yet he is still personable and relatable.

For the first time, the most thought-provoking and inspiring quotes from Buffett are now compiled in a single book.
The Oracle Speaks: Warren Buffett in His Own Words is a comprehensive guidebook to the inner workings of the Berkshire Hathaway chairman. Hundreds of Buffett's best quotes, comprising thoughts on investing, Wall Street, business, politics, taxes, and life lessons, will provide the most intimate and direct look into the mind of a modern business icon and give readers enough counsel to last a lifetime.

Media outlets, financial advisers, politicians, and Americans from Main Street to Wall Street hang on every word Buffett speaks, hoping to gain valuable insight into Buffett's investments and successes. There is possibly no greater stamp of approval in the business world than to have Buffett invest in a company, and few leaders in the course of history have commanded such universally agreed-upon respect. Even beyond his business savvy, Buffett is influential as a progressive thinker and active philanthropist, having pledged to give most of his money to charity through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as well as foundations run by his three children. It is this humility that consistently draws people to Buffett, and will draw people to
The Oracle Speaks.

Most recently, inspired by Buffett's
New York Times editorial in which he claimed he paid too little in taxes, President Barack Obama and Congress have named a series of tax reforms after Buffett. While the political implications have been controversial, Buffett has retained his reputation as an outspoken and successful business leader. The Oracle Speaks draws from decades of interviews, editorials, and annual shareholder reports, amassing the most complete outline of how Buffett believes a good business is run and a good life is led. It's advice that Buffett has successfully adhered to throughout his 80-plus years, and it is advice now available in the succinct, poignant, gift-friendly package of The Oracle Speaks.

Mr. Buffett knows about VALUES - financially, of course, but personal values like principles, integrity, and personal responsibility. I think luck has played a part in his phenomenal success, being born during the best time period in this country's history. It seems generations after his are missing the drive to succeed, and we just get more and more complacent.

If you can read his story and not come away with an enormous amount of respect for his character, and the importance of character, you will probably continue to be poor, regardless of the size of your portfolio.

Written in easy-to-understand language. It is mainly generalities, not so much investment advice or knowledge. Lots of examples from his speeches at various events and universities and appearances on CNBC. Chapter 7 is great advice for anyone, investor or not. It's "Life Lessons" that have worked for him for more than 80 years and that everyone can apply. You can read one page or a chapter or the whole book - one chapter does not necessarily require that you read previous chapters.

Nice book of quotes from Warren Buffet. Many that are repeats from different speeches with a little variation. Easy read and some good one liners

If you're thinking of getting this book in order to find hot stock tips, there aren't any here. But if you're looking for good, common sense advice and an insight into what makes one of the best-ever stock-pickers tick, this book will give you that and a bit extra.

The book is filled with quotations from Warren Buffett about a wide array of topics including life, investing, outlook, charity, and family to name a few. They were gleaned from a number of sources over several decades.

Reading through these quotations, I was struck by how clearly reasoned, uncluttered, and straight-forward these were were. They all served to draw a picture of a man who has his priorities set and is comfortable with who and what he is while being grateful for the opportunity to exercise his talents in the where-and-when he was born into.

There is a section of the book that lists the holdings of Buffett's company, Berkshire Hathaway, including those businesses that are wholly owned by his investment company. Several on the list were a surprise to me, but underscored how diversified the investments are. And now I finally know where the name of the firm came from.

Recommended. It won't make you rich in the stock market, but it might help better define your general outlook on life.

The oldest quote in the book is less than 15 years old. For a quote book of such a published and oft quoted octogenarian I would have expected more depth. To be fair I follow the Oracle more than is healthy but even so, this book seemed like a google search of recent memorable Buffet quotes. Nothing new to see here.

This is a collection of quotes by Buffet grouped by category. Enjoyed his folksy wisdom all in one place, but would have loved HIM reacting today to these quotes which stretch over a number of years.

I enjoyed the book; but, I have heard most of this previously. For those unfamiliar with Mr. Buffett this is likely a good book to read to obtain a sense of the man and his methods.
