“Producers Jack Bender and Jeff Pinkner promise that, unlike ”Lost,“ ”From“ is thoroughly mapped out”

Why ‘Lost’ Producers’ New Series ‘From’ Won’t Be as Frustrating as ‘Lost’

“Lost” producers Jack Bender and Jeff Pinkner are back with the twisty new mystery series “From,” which debuts Feb. 20 on Epix. Instead of stranding people on an enigmatic island, the series, which reunited them with “Lost” star Harold Perrineau, is set in a nightmarish Midwestern town, where no one can ever leave and terrifying creatures prowl after sunset.

During an Epix panel at the Television Critics Association this week, Bender and Pinkner discussed how the series — which is created and executive produced by John Griffin — won’t make the same mistakes “Lost” did, where some mysteries ended in disappointing reveals or were never answered at all.

“I think that having done ‘Lost’ and then taking the lessons of ‘Lost,’ the storytelling lessons and sort of ran them through a filter fringe and tried to apply them here, I think we’re approaching every season like its own chapter with its own questions and its own answers,” Pinkner said.

He also promised that each season, which will be only 10 episodes compared to 22 on “Lost,” will be more “contained.”

“It’s a very contained arc. The limitations of 10 episodes force you to make harder choices. We, John and Jack and I, have been very cognizant of making sure that the characters are asking the questions that we know that the audience is asking,” Pinkner said, no doubt referring to the fact that the WTF moment in the “Lost” pilot where a scouting party runs into a polar bear — on a tropical island — wasn’t mentioned to the rest of the castaways.

“The show is sort of reinforcing and playing along with the audience’s experience of the show… we’re aware of what the audience is asking and looking for, and so being mindful of the questions and knowing that we have answers, and using all of it really just to focus back on what are the characters going through, really that’s the reason we’re so enamored with our cast is we’re taking kind of a ‘Twilight Zone’-y trope and using it to explore humanity,” he said.

Bender added, “Six years of ‘Lost’ was an amazing wave and a great learning experience… the great thing about episodic television is you can follow those roads where they take you. But our creator, John is are working to have every season be a chapter… It is worked out, and creativity may send it up and down, but the journey is clear. The map is out there. And I’m not so sure it always was with ‘Lost,’ as brilliant as ‘Lost’ was.”

In addition to Perrineau, the cast also includes Catalina Sandino Moreno, Eion Bailey, Hannah Cheramy, Simon Webster, Ricky He, Chloe Van Landschoot, Shaun Majumder, Corteon Moore, Pegah Ghafoori, David Alpay, Elizabeth Saunders, Elizabeth Moy and Avery Konrad.

“From” is created and executive produced by John Griffin (“Crater”), directed and executive produced by Jack Bender (“Lost,” “Game of Thrones”) and showrun and executive produced by Jeff Pinkner (“Fringe,” “Alias,” ” Lost”).

This article was written just before the series aired so it was already produced but I can see at least one WTF are they talking about thing the producers stated:

“I think we’re approaching every season like its own chapter with its own questions and its own answers,” Pinkner said.”

Two concerning points:

We, John and Jack and I, have been very cognizant of making sure that the characters are asking the questions that we know that the audience is asking

They're really not lol

I think we’re approaching every season like its own chapter with its own questions and its own answers,” Pinkner said

Well, this season just ended with no answers at all, only more questions, so NO

In other words they are full of 💩!

One of the few things we learned in episode 10 was very minor and we all pretty much already knew it: Tabitha dreamed she was in what looked like a lighthouse and sure enough there was a lighthouse, complete with large brick/stone exterior, matching the interior walls of the one she was in.

Some of us were hoping there wasn’t a giant magical spider. Instead we saw small spiders. After seeing all the webs around the tent, now I do believe it was a giant spider that dragged the tent.

I don't understand why a giant spider would just move their tent.

u/alv80 avatar

A giant magical spider is wise beyond our comprehension. 😂

I hate the idea of a giant spider like the one in Stephen Kings It. But something or someone moved them for some specific reason we don’t yet know.

Boyd and Sara went off far in a direction. Then someone or something moved them in a direction which put them in direct line of sight of the lighthouse light. Now that I think about it, that also doesn’t make sense. The tent was moved and then the lighthouse light was able to shine directly at the tent. So in the morning, why weren’t they able to see the lighthouse? They had to hike for who knows how long and climb up a hillside in order to finally see the lighthouse in another valley.

To feed the hatchlings maybe?

That makes sense. They did seem to be biting Boyd and latching on.

This was not a reassuring read.

It started out okay then I was like....eh 😬

So they basically lied about everything they said in this interview. Cool.

Yup! Pretty much looks that way.

They have not learned anything.

They're really milking this Lost connection. Pinkner wrote like 4 episodes for Lost and Bender directed a ton. It's not like the Damon's wrote this show. They might as well have the Russo's out there and claim that this is part of the MCU.

The main showrunner hasn't really done much, so I get it but come on now.

Actually, Bender and Pinkner were pretty heavily involved with Lost. Especially Bender who not only directed 40 episodes but was also executive producer for most of the run.

I'm going to guess, too, that they read a lot of old fan theories about what was happening on Lost and probably incorporated some of the most interesting ideas into this show. I mean, why try to think of something new when there are a ton of ideas that were speculated by fans of Lost that have never been used before in another show?

u/alv80 avatar

From was created by someone not associated with Lost. He pitched his idea and then the team came on board. Not saying they didn’t end up borrowing from the Lost universe but whatever he initially pitched, got big names interested in his idea. I have faith the end result is going to be good. I’m just pissed off at no answers at the end of the first season. When the series ends, I bet a lot of us will love it all collectively as a binge experience.

Good to know. As long as the showrunners don't hijack the storyline and ruin its ending. I can withstand the journey if the payoff at the end is good and all the questions are answered. It's the investing time in a series only to be disappointed that burns my ass. I don't even have to rattle off names of shows for anyone to know which ones I'm talking about because it has happened so often.

I love a weekly series. Releases of full seasons all at once can ruin interest in a TV show that unfolds like this. Would we even be taking the time to post online and speculate about what's happening in the story if we could watch the entire season in a day? Likely not. This way everyone is on the same page every week and we can stand around the water cooler and try to figure out the mystery together. That, to me, is what helped to make a show like Lost so popular and makes this process so much fun.

I hear ya! Most of us grew up with the weekly thing before Netflix came to town. It has it’s good points but some of us were late to the party with a lot of big hits.

There was nothing I used watched on ABC so I had never even heard of Lost. Back then I was addicted to Stargate SG-1, 24, Heroes, and supernatural. Summer of 2008, the SyFy channel started airing reruns of Lost. One night I had it playing while assembling a bookshelf. As soon as I heard smoky in the jungle while the survivors were on the beach hearing him for the first time too, I stopped what I was doing and paid attention to the show. I can remember getting the DVDs of the first few seasons a few weeks later and staying up all night over a weekend. Those were good times to me. I did the same thing with Attack on Titan, coming in a year after the first season had aired, stayed up late on a Saturday night and just got happily lost in that world.

Yup! We all have those shows that got canceled and left us high and dry. Do you remember Flashforward from 2010? So many like that which is why I like that I’ve been late to so many shows so I can go into them knowing if it’s worth the risk with my time. Game of Thrones. I watched the first few episodes 2 or 3 times over a few years and then finally got into it and realized I was wrong about it not being for me. I binged the hell outta that show but even being late to that one couldn’t have saved me from the end of season 8. lol

Enough me me rambling on and on. I really hope From doesn’t let any of us down anymore than episode 9 and 10 did for some of us. I want to stay invested in From.

It just occurred to me:

It’s strange that the producers made statements about their own show and then 2 months later the end of season 1 basically means they lied in that February interview. I think I’m going to try to ask one of them about it on twitter and see if they respond.

The studio, Epix/MGM, could have demanded changes at any point. This is one of the ways studios end up in fights with producers and directors. And unlike long season shows like The Walking Dead, From was done filming the season long before the first episode aired but they always have lots of unused footage ready in the editing room.

The actress who plays Jasmine, on Instagram, made it sound like she had filmed her episode 7 scenes long ago and had no idea when anything was going to air.

I could be 100% wrong but it is possible and they should speak up about their statements not matching their actions.

I don't really use Twitter so if you do that, please come back and share it! I am curious about all of this too, in a way it doesn't really make sense to me.

u/alv80 avatar

Will look up the producers this week and tweet them. If one of them actually replies, I’ll definitely let you and this sub know. I think I might also lookup the person who did the interview and let them know they were punk’d too. Maybe they can followup with the producers too. I really want to know what the hell happened because we sure didn’t get any answers.

Their plan is the show doesn't get renewed.
