recorded in the 70`s with the cream of musicians(10cc,barklay james harvest, etc)this is a brave attempt at an original concept album. davy grohl missed the mark, only just, with this sweeping epic of journey.check it out for a gem of a uk prog rock assemblege. you wont be dissapointed. thewizardfromaus

Maddy Prior, Justin Hayward, 10cc and Barclay James Harvest; what's not to like? Actually the plot of the story is rather naff, but the music is terrific. This album should have been huge with two sequels, but it went nowhere and the sequels were never made. I wish they'd all get together again and do it now while everyone's still alive.

The music is excellent. I think it would have been better with a narration linking the tracks and developing the story but it is still enjoyable.

This is one of those 70's concept albums that just managed to slip under the radar. Featuring vocals by Maddy Prior and Justin Hayward it tells a fantasy story much the same as The King Of Elflands Daughter (album out of print). Being totally honest I only listen to the first side (Yes I do have the original ablum) as it looses a lot in the second half, but the first side is stunning in it's musical sweep. Ms Priors voice is as beautiful and entrancing as ever when she sings about flying. This is the only abum by this group of artists and it was to be a triology but the sales never allowedd them to finish the concept. On the whole buy it if only for Maddy and Justin it won't disappoint.

Thank heavens the latest CD release includes the full text of the novella that accompanied the original vinyl release of this album. (But be warned - you'll need a magnifying glass!)
Considering that this is a concept album based upon mythical folklore and that it comes from the 1970's (surely the age of naff concept albums?), it has worn well and is still musically interesting.
Don't expect anything resembling Barclay James Harvest music, but if you're into dragons, elfin landscapes, mytical lyrics, and some good melodies, then this could be for you.
Just don't expect Tolkien.

Reviewed in Germany on 6 August 2004
