Wineries & Vineyards
In 1970, Tim and Barbara St. Amant Spencer purchased 43 acres in the Jackson Valley of Amador County and decided to plant Zinfandel. As Tim began to fall in love with Port wine, he contacted UC Davis to see what Portuguese varieties were available to plant in California. Those first Portuguese grapes ripened in the fall of 1981, and were sold to a now defunct winery named JW Morris. Shortly after harvest, Tim received a tip that the winery was going to file for bankruptcy, leaving us holding the bag. He quickly realized that selling wine bottle by bottle was preferable to going broke, and so he set out in his pickup truck to reclaim whatever wine was decent. Arriving at a nearly deserted warehouse Tim discovered 300 gallons of young port wine from our Amador County vineyard. He colorfully instructed the reluctant cellar worker to load that wine in his pickup, and thus, St. Amant Winery was born. That first wine, our 1981 Vintage Port, was a hit and still stands as a testament to all that is possible with these unique varieties in our vineyard. By the late 80's the white Zinfandel craze took off and we had several very profitable years selling grapes. This provided us the resources to open our own winery, where we could control every aspect of production from crushing to bottling. We opened our winery in 1990 in French Camp, CA. This was not wine country, and at a time when Americans were just getting comfortable with the French varietal wines, we were focused on Portuguese varieties, port-styled wines, and other obscure wines! 1996 marked a dark year in our history. Our vineyard was dying of phyloxera, and when you are a vertically integrated winery, growing your own grapes, and making your own wine, and your vineyard dies - you've got a problem. At this point, Tim worked out a deal with the Lodi Winegrape Commission - if a grower brought us 2 tons of grapes, we would make the wine, and give them 25 cases, and keep the balance for ourselves. We had numerous growers take us up on the offer, and then one day Jerry Fry showed up with 7 tons of beautiful Old Vine Zinfandel grapes. Tim didn't know what to do. We didn't have the money to pay for the grapes, and we had no idea how the wine would turn out. Jerry told Tim not to worry about it, that we would work it out later. We ended up bottling 450 cases of that first vintage. The Mohr-Fry Ranch Old Vine Zinfandel won a bunch of awards, sold out quickly, and to this day remains our most popular wine. Throughout the remainder of the 90's, we meticulously redeveloped our Amador County vineyard, and doubled down on Portuguese varieties. In 2004, at 66 years old, Tim was diagnosed with Lymphoma. After a hard-fought two year battle, Tim passed away 3 days before harvest. Tim's son, Stuart Spencer, took over as winemaker for St. Amant, and has continued to honor his father's legacy by making fine Portuguese wines. Barbara, Tim's wife, continues to manage the business, and ensure that Tim's legacy is always honored.

We did not have an appointment but were accommodated right away on a Sunday morning in early November. Our tasting host Ashley was very knowledgeable and fun. The cost was $10 or $15 for 5 samples. So much more reasonable than Napa/Sonoma prices. The quality was just as good. Afterwards, we bought a glass of wine and strolled the grounds. Lots of seating areas. There is a cafe too. This was a great start to our Lodi wine experience.

We dropped by on a Monday afternoon in early November with no reservation and they were able to accommodate us with no waiting. Tastings by the flight were affordable and they also offered by the glass/bottle. There is extensive outdoor seating and limited indoor. Cheese plates available too. Super friendly staff.

Friendly staff. Tasty old vine wines! The outdoor seating area is not fancy. Indoor is straightforward, too. So you have incredible wines in a very simple low-key setting. Doesn't make it bad, just not very glamorous. The wines do the talking here. Affordable tastings offered here. We did not have an appointment, but they could accommodate us on a quiet Monday afternoon in early November.

We started our tasting day at Van Ruiten. It was a warm, sunny day and we sat out on the patio under the shade cover; there was a nice breeze. We split two flights of wine amongst 6 of us - the pours were generous and we knew we had more stops to make. The wine was wonderful; we especially enjoyed the Chenin Blanc - which of course we bought a bottle of! Cute little gift shop inside.

If you stop anywhere in Lodi, stop here. We stopped here based on the recommendation of a staff member at the wine visitor center and were not disappointed. The wines are fantastic. I am typically not a Chardonnay or red Zinfandel fan but I love theirs. Glo guided us through our tasting. She is so knowledgeable and down right lovely. I enjoyed every wine I tried so much that I joined the club.
Unlike another larger winery that I stopped at in the area, the staff at Lucas are professional, polite, and incredibly knowledgeable.

We were able to visit on a day with few visitors, which allowed us to have a wonderful experience!
We were Absolutely amazed with the organ and the music from it, was such a wonderful experience!!
I would recommend the drive out & experience for that alone!!
We got to enjoy a couple hours, that was so soul-touching and heart-warming! The building and and organ create an atmosphere that is amazing and enchanting.
The property is surrounded by the vineyard, which are rows and rows of perfectly placed grid of vines. This property is a piece of paradise.

Is you are lucky enough to visit on a day with few people, and able to enjoy the surroundings, you will be blessed indeed!

Berghold Winery - step into history and class. Entering Berghold winery feels like you're entering a classy French chateau or mansion. Senior Berghold had an opportunity working for Levi Straus to visit extensively in France and decided then he wanted to own a winery. We were hosted by Julia Berghold, daughter-in-law of original owners. Her husband Miles is their son and winemaker,

ABOUT THE SITE: for wine geeks like me: the property is all estate and is still hand-picked, bladder pressed and hand-crafted. Results from soil testing said they had a lot of granite alluvial soil, and there's not a lot of it in Lodi, so they can definitely create a unique sense of place/terrior. Lodi took Zinfandel and made it the Lodi grape, yet their best vineyard is Merlot.

This is a very quaint small local winery. Very friendly and love the farm animals! They have some outdoor seating and very relaxed atmosphere. The wine is very good. And good prices. Just a nice relaxing place and not pretentious at all.

It's a few miles away from the Cosumnes River Preserve, which is the go-to place for Winter crane viewing. Unfortunately, many people go-to, but the shy cranes often stay away. Hence - the Isenberg spot, a little further South, a little out of the way, a little harder to reach becomes a much better place for viewing.

We happened upon this one and it didn’t disappoint. Pulled us in with their posted story—captured us with their experience and their wine! Meghan on Sunday was great-didn’t have to push us at all-and we joined their wine club. We tried some other tastings/wineries before, some after, and decided to go back on Tuesday with Nathan..tried ones outside of the menu and they were even better. The stories made it for us. We also met Stuart! Bonus! Yep-no frills or fancy room-doesn’t need or want to be. The wines speak for themselves. Thank you!
