Chance The Rapper teams up with DJ Premier for new single, 'Together'

Chicago emcee and Acid Rap creator Chance The Rapper has teamed up with the iconic boom-bap producer DJ Premier for his new single ‘Together’. The ‘Cocoa Butter Kisses’ lyricist is preparing to release his highly-anticipated album, Star Line Gallery and has been dropping a series of singles.

Although the singles released so far are not yet available on streaming platforms, fans are coming out in droves to celebrate the rapper’s return to the forefront of hip-hop.

‘Together’ hears Chance The Rapper (real name Chancellor Bennett) reflect on his career and even take it back to his childhood growing up in the ‘Windy City’ Chicago. With additional production by Peter Cottontale and backing vocals from Rachel Robinson and Jack Red, the track is somewhat sentimental.

‘Together’ hears Bennett rap lyrics such as, “If you keep the house in the family you could keep the family in the house / If you on the run, you got family in the South.” This latest single follows other tracks from Star Line Gallery including, ‘I Will Be Your (Black Star Line Freestyle)’ and ‘Buried Alive.’

Bennett debuted the track by performing it live on The Voice where he performed it from atop a rooftop. Although the fans enjoyed it, the song is far fro a party record made for the clubs.

The song also hears Bennett reflect on the importance of community and family as he raps, “We used to watch ‘Annie, are you okay?’ on the couch/ My cousin used to slam me ’til I punched him in the mouth/ My auntie used to cook for 20 people every week/ My uncle in the basement even if they never speak.”

Chance The Rapper took to Twitter/X to spell out the song for his followers, writing, “This is a song about housing justice painted with nostalgia. I hope the memories can elevate the core message rather than bury it.”

DJ Premier sampled the 1973 song ‘Memories Are Here to Stay’ by The Intruders for this track, one which he previously used for Common’s track ‘6th Sense’. You can listen to ‘Together’ below.
