William Steele Holman (6 September 1822-22 April 1897) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-IN 4) from 4 March 1859 to 3 March 1865 (succeeding James Bradford Foley and preceding John Hanson Farquhar) and from 4 March 1867 to 3 March 1869 (succeeding Farquhar and preceding George W. Julian), from IN-3 from 3 March 1869 to 4 March 1875 (succeeding Morton C. Hunter and preceding Michael C. Kerr), from IN-5 from 4 March 1875 to 3 March 1877 (succeeding John Coburn and preceding Thomas M. Browne), and from IN-4 from 4 March 1881 to 3 March 1895 (succeeding Jeptha D. New and preceding James Eli Watson) and from 4 March to 22 April 1897 (succeeding Watson and preceding Francis M. Griffith).

Biography[]

William Steele Holman was born in Dearborn County, Indiana in 1822, and he became a lawyer in 1843 and served as probate judge from 1843 to 1846, prosecuting attorney from 1847 to 1849, in the State House from 1851 to 1852, as Judge for the Court of Common Pleas from 1852 to 1856, and in the US House of Representatives from 1859 to 1865, from 1867 to 1877, from 1881 to 1895, and in 1897. Holman was known for his opposition to government spending (especially on aid for the transcontinental railroads). He died in 1897.
