Where is Wilhelmstein Island?
This pretty little artificial island was created in the 18th century in Lake Steinhude as fortification by Count William of Schaumburg-Lippe. 1.25-hectare Wilhelmstein Island is located in the Hamburg region/Lower Saxony. The island is still home to Wilhelmstein fortress and small island houses. Wilhelmstein is a popular destination for both locals and tourists and can be reached by so-called “emigrants‘ boats“ from Steinhude or Mardorf.
Who owns Wilhelmstein Island?
Fortress and island are still owned by the House of Schaumburg-Lippe. Count Wilhelm of Schaumburg-Lippe had the island built between 1761 and 1765 and was planned to be the centre of the small state of Schaumburg-Lippe. It also accommodated a renowned military academy. In 2005 Count Alexander renovated the buildings on the island and in 2021 the island was leased to Steinhuder Meer Tourismus GmbH for a period of fifteen years.

There are many events and activities to explore on the island. Start with a boat trip to the island with an authentic “emigrants‘ boat“.
When on the island visit the many island houses, souvenir shops and cafés. Do not miss the excellent exhibition on Steinhuder Meer nature park.
The fortress houses a big museum displaying old maps, weapons, rifles, and other historic items of the island. Visit one of the many events organized, such as Mallorca Party, big handicraft markets or concerts. More than 80,000 day-trippers yearly visit Wilhelmstein.
