NEWPORT – The Craftsbury Academy (CA) and Hazen Union varsity track and field teams were back in action at North Country Union High School during the week and at the Burlington Invitational over the weekend.
Senior Gabe Aubuchon recorded his best time in the 100m for Hazen last Tuesday at the North Country Meet, won by Adam Loyd of Lyndon Institute. Aubuchon also had a personal best in the 400m event, with Oliver Johnson of St. Johnsbury Academy (SJA) besting the field.
Sophomore Lewis LaPierre ran his best time of the season for the Wildcats in the 1500m, shaving 12 seconds off his previous best. Ari Leven of SJA captured the event.
Freshman teammate Daniel Pougnier finished fifth in the 300m with his best time of the season, behind event winner Emmett Johnson of SJA.
Pougnier and LaPierre also recorded their best javelin throws of the season, with LaPierre gaining over seven feet from his last meet.
The three-time defending Division I champion SJA boys’ squad captured 11 events on the afternoon, taking home overall honors over runner-up North Country.
Hazen sophomore Chloe Dyer recorded personal records in the 100m, 400m, and javelin events. North Country’s multi-sport standout Sabine Brueck took home the hardware in the long jump, 100m, and 300m hurdles. The junior star also was named the Vermont Gatorade Player of the Year in girls’ basketball this past winter.
CA freshman Theo Alexander set personal records in both the 800m and the javelin, with freshman teammate Kosmos Glestos recording his best throw of the season in the discus event.
On the girls’ side, Charger freshman Arwen Alexander had personal bests in the 400m and 800m, freshman Emma Stout recorded her best distance in the long jump event, and senior Daisy Roianov performed the same feat in both the shot put and javelin.

Silas Hunt competed against the best high school track and field athletes in the state for CA in the 1500m at the Burlington Invitational on Saturday and joined teammates Charlie Kehler, Alex Califano, and Matthew Califano to compete in the 4X800m relay. The Charger boys’ program holds the Division IV state record in the event. The Hilltopper boys’ team made it a clean sweep on the week, holding off Essex to claim overall honors.
“We took a young crew to North Country, and they all did a great job, with some of our athletes competing in events they had never done at the varsity level before. All in all, it was a great week!” said Charger head coach Sarah Hunt.
Hazen and CA were back in action on Tuesday at Lyndon Institute and are scheduled to travel back to North Country High School next Tuesday.
