Alien vs. Zombies: The Dark Lurking, Alien Undead
Hooptober 9: It’s in Space Now
You ever wanted to see Aliens with a fraction of the budget and talent? Well there’s plenty of films that fit that criteria and this is one of them.
This shakes it up a bit by also adding Event Horizon, Resident Evil, Jin-Roh, and probably more into the mix. It’s a real “made by fans, for fans” sort of film.
Unlike the last low-budget film I suffered through, this actually went all in with its practical effects, pouring most of the money into making them nice and gooey. And it’s certainly gooey. While there might be long stretches between them, whenever a monster attack happens you can be sure it’ll be full of sloppy,…
obviously someone watched alien and event horizon back to back and decided that they wanted to make a movie ripping them both off because that's exactly what this is
Summer of Trash Challenge 2023: 3. Watch an Alien clone.
Starts out pretty entertaining with people crawling through dark ducts and hallways, lights flashing and blasting weird mutant creatures. And they even killed the really annoying character fairly early. Yay!! But then things started to feel a little repetitive. Hole up in a place, shoot hordes of creatures, repeat. So my attention was starting to drift a little, even though the creatures were kinda cool (don't really look like Xenomorphs as the cover is suggesting), and when they're shot, things get splattery, and people are being whittled down really quickly, but I found myself needing a little variety...and it came. An unexpected, very interesting reveal happens, and my mind raced…
Watched in a desperate attempt to add to my "Bad Times at the Research Facility" list.
Much like the scientists in those movies, I have perhaps delved to depths best left undelved to... And in those depths, I’ve unearthed a low low low budget Aliens / Resident Evil knockoff... A bunch of soldiers and scientists are trying to survive an incident at a sci-fi research facility. It's basically exactly what I'm looking for with that list…
But at what cost?
It's shot almost entirely in shaky extreme close ups, the audio seems to all be ADR, the muzzle flashes are all digital (at least the goopey monster splatter is practical!) and the story is barely there.
Feels like what Italian 80s schlock-offs (the bad ones) would look like if they were still made today.
A low budget Alien-ish ripoff with top notch practical effects, quality creature effects, loads of gore, and lots of fast paced action sequences in dark corridors.
Yep I dug it.

It Came from Ripoff Space#387
Event Horizon meets Zombies meets Aliens meets Doom and other properties with half the budget and mashed up together to give us a gorey fun time for the cast while dwindling the cast down quick as possible while repeating scenes over and over again for the action!
The bad dubbing, the nonsensical plot, the cheesy over the top hammy acting, the cast are having a great time with this and seems they wanted to do this as a love letter for those kinds of films they just sat down, binged and make one for fun. It's not the greatest but the hearts in the right place. Kat, Viking. This may be a fun one to check out if you're interested for a bad horror fun night.
7/10
The Dark Lurking is a 2009 micro budget combination of Resident Evil, Doom, and Alien, if those movies were smooshed together in a blender and made on what seems like a $1000 budget. A woman wakes up on a space station research facility with no memory of who she is or why she's there, after all hell has broken loose and Xenomorph-like monsters are running around killing scientists and turning them into zombies, when a platoon of space special ops soldiers show up to figure out what happened and rescue any survivors.
When I say this is micro budget, I mean it. The acting is laughably atrocious across the board, the filming style feels very amateurish, there's a constant…
This is ripping off James Camerons Aliens at its purest - dark corridors full of blinking lights and snarling creatures. Yes, the production values are low but the sets are detailed in their slight wobbliness. The acting ranges from pisspoor to mostly ok-ish but never bad enough to ruin the movie. The script is full of cliches but the general cause of the carnage is actually way cooler than the norm. I am a sucker for Alien ripoffs and this a fun and silly one.
Hey, do you remember that one scene where Spider-Man tells Iron Man about that really old movie Alien, do you remember that? Well it had a sequel, called Aliens. Do you remember that? Yeh, that was cool.
Mix that with Event Horizon and that’s whatever this movie is. Alien + Aliens + Event Horizon and so much overacting!!! Love me some scene chewing!!
All the camera seizures and strobe lights I do not love. Makes me nauseous…
Quick hack - no characters! Who are these people? No one knows, no one cares. He might be named Dan. Or Dad. Or Dend?
Happy New Year ya filthy animals!!
This looked pretty good for a low budget action/horror flick. It was all the other elements in it that didn't quite live up. It was as if the director seen a bunch of Hollywood sci-fi action movies and said "I wanna do that!" and then wrote and directed a movie that looked like every other one out there. The story gets a little dumb towards the end, but differed from most movies. You can see the inspirations behind the movie, and it tries it's best to be one of them, but falls short.
The story I can forgive. I've enjoyed many horror and action film that all share the same generic plot, but still entertain. The acting on the other…
Honestly, I was kinda digging this at times. The creature effects are solid and there’s plenty of action and gore to help carry the load. And for what it’s worth, it looks pretty good, too. It’s one of those instances where, with some more money along with some better writing and acting, this could’ve been pretty good. It was certainly better than I was expecting going in.
I can never tell if such instances make me more appreciative of what was attempted and more positive of the movie; or if it bugs me seeing the vision but being let down by __ issues. Or maybe I just kept getting thrown off by that guy who looks like the love child of Dwayne Johnson and Rob Schneider.
Brad Sykes did it better, but then, of course he did. Brad Sykes is the king. So, sure, it's no Plaguers, but it's plenty fun on its own. When the action and awesome creature FX aren't wowing you, the hilariously bad performances are. This film truly boasts some of the best so-bad-its-great acting this side of Otaku Vampires, because nothing beats Otaku Vampires, except MAYBE Brad Sykes, but certainly not The Darkness Lurking. Still, it's way better than you'd ever expect for a movie that your mom would accidentally rent from a red box, mistaking it for an Alien movie.
