Nostalgia ain’t what it used to be. I watched this movie as a wide-eyed 14 year-old boy in 1977, and it just doesn’t have the same impact today, which I would primarily blame on the jarring music, and the lack of the ‘Heavy Mob’ out in force (standard for all of the TV episodes, but just a few minutes at the very start and very end). As a dinosaur from that era, I have to say that I never forgot the main beats (especially partial nudity from Lynda and Diane, two of the hottest women of that time). Apparently the core TV audience was teenage boys, and I wouldn’t disagree. This was primarily a political movie, like ‘Three days of the condor’ – almost the antithesis of what the ‘Sweeney’ was all about - which I could follow and understand, but found the ‘Sweeney 2’ sequel more close to home, with its blaggers and shooters.
Jack Regan of London's Flying Squad, aka The Sweeney gets involved in a conspiracy involving the British government and major oil companies. Feature length movie spin off of The Sweeney, the 70's cop series. a bit dated but an enjoyable and gritty thriller with series leads John Thaw and Dennis Waterman on fine form as the toughest cops in London. Bizarrely though released in the mid 70's it's set in the late 70's giving it a scifi feel set on an alternate Earth if you like with a fictional oil corporation as the villains. One of the better TV series spin offs from the 70's at a time when it seemed every other series had a movie spin off.
Loved it. Great quality print, great soundtrack, and for aficionados of 70s dodgy geezer ‘fashion’ there’s a lot to love. Plus I have never seen such an array of gorgeous 70s cars in gorgeous 70s colours in one place before or since. Well worth the modest cost. I’ll have to watch the first one now, albeit in the wrong order!
Saw this when at cinema in the 70s. All the cigarette smoke in the cinema made the film very misty but now nice and crisp on Blu-ray. Always amazes me how bank robbers don't have a flippin clue how to spend their Dosh guv. Watch this film.
