A place to discuss and share Progressive Rock music, and anything prog-related.
Some of the quaint & extremely cumbrous effects equipment that early Prog-Rock artists - *the pioneers* of it, it could be said! - got used to handling: the »Mellotron (or Chamberlin)« & the »spring reverberation« .
Some Images of the Comptraptions
And often very prone to breaking-down! … especially the most diabolically complex Mellotron/Chamberlin .
Spring reverberation units aren't too bad, actually … as-long-as they aren't dropped from appreciable height , or anything.
¡¡ No no no! … the first Prog-Rock artists weren't *pioneers* ! … there were *loads*-o' Prog-Rock artists *before* 'em !!
☹️🧐

I had a King Crimson concert in my hometown cancelled because the mellotron kept tripping the breakers. This was around 1975
OMD talked about a show in Portugal that needed to be abandoned because the grid was completely overloaded and their Mellotron kept slowing down.
That's a bit odd! ... I mean the power consumption isn't going to be vast ! It'll be negligible in-comparison to the grid of a town . I can only suppose that the breakers were sensitive to the particular noise the thing injects into the mains: the waveform of it being exactly the shape that the breakers happen to be sensitive to, or something like that - anti-serendipity, maybe we could call it. Which I would've thought could be cured with a suitable filter for keeping noise from being injected into the mains ... which totally exist, & are regularly used on industrial machinery to keep the supply to folks' homes 'clean' of nasty spikes & stuff.
Was it a gig you were planning to go to!? That would be a downer! ... you'd well be cursing the Authorities concerned with all that for bungling the seeing-to it.
I was at the auditorium and they cancelled right after the warm up act! it was infuriated, especially being a teenage boy with the patience of a gnat. I couldn’t tell you exactly why they cancelled , but Fripp did a small intimate solo performance at a local radio station to promote “Exposure” . he actually did a q&a (yes! He did a q and a) where he explained why they had to cancel. but that was 45 years ago, so who tf knows ?
what the fucking fuck is cumbrous?

Happy Cake Day!
Better late than forever ....
Cumbrous is (without expletives), according to the Oxford Dictionary, Merriam Webster etc.:
cumbrous/ˈkʌmbrəs
adjective: cumbrous
literary term for cumbersome.
late Middle English (in the sense ‘difficult to get through’)
Frequently used until the end of the 19th century.
I'm less sure about what "the f-ing f" it is.
