All the Way From SA, Comedian Jaxx Justice Hits Beijing, May 18
Jaxx (Chantal) Justice has been making waves in the comedy scene both in her home country of South Africa and abroad in recent years. Her witty and satirical comic style, along with her willingness to tackle any topic head-on, has led her to be dubbed "the fearless comic”.
She has won multiple comedy awards and played at some of South Africa’s most prestigious comedy venues, and next Saturday (May 18) you can catch her for yourself in Beijing for the first time. She will be bringing her hilarious show You Need to Calm Down, supported by local comedians Kei Gambit, Jean Meyer and Justin Noutch. Ahead of the show we reached out to Justice to find out more about her comedy journey.
How long have you been doing stand-up comedy?
I've been doing stand-up comedy for more than ten years now.
What made you decide to start doing comedy and how did you get started?
I used humor to cope through life and make light of darkness. I did an open mic competition and ended up winning!
What was it like doing stand-up for the first time?
It was the same feeling as getting your first tattoo. You get it, you like it, you want more of it!
What have been your best and worst moments since doing comedy?
Best: living the life every 12 year old dreams of. Having the privilege to travel the world and to share the stage with my idols!
Worst: Being broke while chasing this dream for a few years and that one audience member who brought his own jokes to a comedy show. (Hecklers-yuck)
What comedians would you say have influenced you the most?
Ricky Gervais, Jimmy Car, Hannah Gadzby and Russell Peters.
How do you feel about performing in Beijing for the first time?
Ecstatic to see the difference in people from South Africa and China and to find the similarities we share as humans and if there's none, then we'll just make fun of the Americans together. I want to bring South Africa closer to the world through comedy, so other parts of the world will understand us and our way of living better than the narrative that has been fed to them (although almost all of it is true).
Any advice for other budding comedians out there?
Just be funny and stop complaining about hard work! We don't care. We've all been there. You’ve gotta keep working harder!
