Alto saxophonist Akane Ezawa's leader band made its debut on Oh! Jazz. Born in 1992 in Kanagawa Prefecture, she started playing saxophone in middle school and has been active at the forefront of the scene since studying jazz at Showa University of Music. In 2019, she received high praise for her participation in the Perth International Jazz Festival in Western Australia with her leader band, and her debut album "Thaw" in 2021 also garnered much attention
One of Akane Ezawa's charms is undoubtedly her outstanding composition sense. In her performance at BODY & SOUL, many of her original compositions were played. The highlight is the first track, "From Archive". It strikes the heart with its emotional melody that is gentle yet with a good tempo, mixing a positive brightness with a touch of sadness. Just listening to this one song should allow you to experience her wonderful sensibility. Even in "Blue For 4", reminiscent of Billy Harper's rugged modal compositions, her unique musical world with depth is evident. Her restrained expression reveals rich emotions, showcasing her subtlety. The slow piece "Spring Thaw" also exudes a beautiful scenery that gently unfolds before your eyes. These three songs are included in her first album "Thaw", and each one is inspired by her own experiences and imagination. She portrays subtle landscapes and delicate movements of the heart that might go unnoticed by ordinary people, translating them into her refined expressions. Even in the unique title track "A Taste of Shi-sha-mo", she presents a post-Coltrane style number that showcases the sound reminiscent of a tenor saxophone.
The cover songs were also well-chosen to compliment her style. The rendition of "Isotope" from Joe Henderson's 1964 recording "Inner Urge" allows you to enjoy Akane's alto saxophone with a rich lower register. Furthermore, as an encore, she performed Kenny Barron's masterpiece "Voyage". With a heated performance featuring a surprise appearance by Mayuko Katagura replacing David Bryant, the audience's excitement reached its peak.
Backing her up were top-level musicians David Bryant on piano, Takumi Awaya on bass, and Gene Jackson on drums. They skillfully complemented Akane's expressive compositions, showcasing convincing performances. The Akane Ezawa Quartet, with even more expectations for their future activities, is sure to deliver an outstanding performance with new songs mixed in next time.

アルトサックス奏者、江澤茜のリーダーバンドが、Oh!Jazzに初登場した。
江澤茜は、1992年生まれ。神奈川県で育ち、中学時代にサックス演奏をスタートし、昭和音楽大学ジャズコース在学中からシーンの第一線で活躍している。2019年には西オーストラリアで行われた、Perth International Jazz Festivalにリーダーバンドで参加して高い評価を受け、2021年のデビューアルバム『Thaw』でも多くの注目を集めた。
江澤茜の持つ魅力は何と言っても、抜群の作曲センスだろう。BODY & SOULの公演では、彼女のオリジナル曲が多く演奏されている。まず圧巻なのが一曲目の「From Archive」だ。穏やかでありながらテンポが良く、前向きな明るさと切なさが混じりあうエモーショナルな旋律に胸を打たれる。この一曲を聴くだけでも彼女の素晴らしい感性を味わうことができるはずだ。ビリー・ハーパーの硬質なモーダル曲を彷彿させる「Blue For 4」でも、芯のある彼女の音世界が見えてくる。抑制の効いた表現の中に豊かな心情が見えてくるような演奏で奥ゆかしい。スローな「春の雪解け(Spring Thaw)」も、その風景が目の前にふんわりと現れてくるような美しさがある。これらの3曲は、ファーストアルバム『Thaw』に収録されているが、どの曲も彼女自身の体験からイマジネーションを得ているという。普通の人なら見落としてしまいそうなふとした風景や、繊細な心の動きを描写し、彼女独自の洗練された表現に落とし込んでいる。「A Taste of Shi-sha-mo」というユニークなタイトルのナンバーでさえ、テナーサックスのような音色を活かしたポストコルトレーン調のナンバーを聴かせてくれるのだ。
カバー曲も彼女の味をうまく引き立てた選曲だ。ジョー・ヘンダーソンの1964年録音作『Inner Urge』に収められた「Isotope」は、中低音に厚みがある江澤のアルトが乗りに乗った好演が楽しめる。さらにアンコールでは、ケニー・バロンの名曲「Voyage」を披露。デビット･ブライアントに代わり片倉真由子がサプライズ出演した白熱の演奏で、観客のボルテージも最高潮に達している。
バックを務めるデビット･ブライアント(p)、 粟谷巧(b)、ジーン・ジャクソン(ds)というトップレベルのメンバーも、江澤の感性豊かなナンバーに乗って、見事な手腕を振るっている。説得力のある演奏で、益々活躍が期待させる江澤茜カルテット、新たな新曲を交えた次回のライブがとても持ち通しい。
2024年の3月、東京BODY＆SOUL で行われたOh!Jazzのアーカイブで彼女の才能をぜひ目撃して欲しい。
