The cathedral of Bamberg is definitely one of the greatest buildings in the city. By the time we arrived there it was already closed, but we could appreciate the external architecture nonetheless; next to the cathedral there’s also a garden which is worth the visit.

The Bamberg Cathedral, completed in the 13th century, holds significant historical and cultural importance, earning its place in the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Town of Bamberg" since 1993. Officially known as Bamberg Cathedral of St. Peter and St. George, it is also referred to as the Kaiserdom or Imperial Cathedral. This cathedral houses the only papal grave in Germany after the destruction of Pope Benedict V's tomb in Hamburg in the early 19th century. Emperor Heinrich II and his wife Kunigunde are interred in a sepulcher near the entrance, while Pope Clement II is also buried here. Visitors, like those depicted in the reviews, appreciate the cathedral's stunning architecture, intricate paintings, and notable historical figures entombed within. Monumental cathedral with a lot of history and importance! Built in the 13th century - to the form as we see today - it's one of the most sacred buildings in Germany, and indeed from the outside the architecture is stunning distinguishing the cathedral by four majestic towers visible from most parts of the city. Even though the cathedral was under construction I was still able to admire its beauty, I especially appreciate the detailed Prince's portal on the side of the cathedral. From the inside it was a bit let down. Yes, seeing the horseman, the most significant work of art in the cathedral, alongside the organs and the interior was great, but nothing mind blowing - judging strictly from the design perspective, not the cultural heritage. There are simply more beautiful cathedrals around Germany. From up close I was able to see The Tomb of the Saintly Imperial couple and the horsemen, unfortunately the cathedra, papal tomb (the only place north of Alps with buried pope) and the fresco of The Second Coming of Christ at the apse were fenced, therefore not able to admire from up close in details. There is no organized tour inside nor you can go to one of its towers (let down for me as I like seeing places from above), but you can purchase a small brochure for 1 EUR to help you navigate through the place. Be aware that opening hours may vary due to masses (during my time of visit the cathedral was closed between 12:00 and 12:30). Free entry. Visited in July 2022.

History said that it was built and founded by Henry II in the year 1004 and it was declared sacred in 1012. It burnt down twice that it took a long time to rebuild. A magnificent and majestic cathedral I've ever seen in Bamberg that composes of 4 big towers that surround and a solemn place inside though a presence tourists can be seen. It has a very rich history and famous cathedral in Germany. A lot of statues inside and outside of the cathedral. Lots of sculptures, carvings and styles (Romaneque and Gothic) are impressive and superb. There are lots of altars and organs (1415, 1868 and 1976) that mostly built against the north wall. We can find here the only place in Germany where the grave of Pope Clement II is buried. The tombs of Henry II and his wife - Empress Cunigunde are buried here too. A worthy place to visit and there was no entrance fee when I visited this cathedral. Observed dress code when visiting this place. According to the information, its official name is Bamberg Cathedral of St. Peter and St. George. It is also called the Kaiserdom (“Imperial Cathedral”).

What a historic building right at the center of Bamberg and close to the old rathaus. The cathedral portrays Catholic over a millennium aga and the richness it offers through history of Church for the people of Bamberg. Monuments are nicely spaced out as the hall is large (with ongoing constructions of the podium). There's underground sitting place unfortunately locked and out of access to visitors as of yesterday. However you'll still find enough to go round and appreciate the beauty of it's architecture or see God in the splendor of how the people of Bamberg largely perceived as Catholics. Sure during mass one find another atmosphere to observe institution of church at service to it's members. However as visitor it's already enough to enjoy sightseeing. Nearby you'll find various attractions and city life, rose flower garden, eateries and museums. There's nothing to miss visiting this cathederal.

A marvelous medieval church with a really long history dating back to 11th century, its construction was only finished by 13th century. It is amazing to see a mixture of both Romanesque and gothic styles within the same cathedral. The four imposing church towers is a sight to admire from a distance. It has many interesting relics and an underground chapel, which makes it unique from other churches I have visited. It is a burial tomb of Henry II and Pope Clement II, which makes it the only church to have a Papal grave in Germany. Located on a small hill top, can be reached through a small walk from the old town.

Beautiful place, very nice detailed architecture, interesting paintings and there’s actually a pope inside!! It’s in a pretty touristy historical area, totally recommended if you’re around.

I always find it fascinating to visit churches wherever I go. And European Churches are particularly grand and imposing. I'm not an expert with architecture, but surely I know how to appreciate one whenever I see them.

Beary impressive architecture! As well as its size. It was a really cool feeling standing among those old magnificent buildings. I didn’t visit inside though, but I’m sure it’s at least as cool as the outside 🐻⛪️🤩 If you’re interested in churches I might think it’s a must-see, if you’re visiting Bamberg 📍☝️😁

A beautiful well maintained historical landmark with lots of paintings, and a guided tour of the Bishop's residence included with your entry ticket. Must visit for a tour of Bamberg.

The massive building is quite modest from the outside, but inside there are plenty of lavishly decorated rooms. The visit to the Prince-Bishop's Apartment is only guided and in German. We were the first ones in the morning and since there was no one but us, we were very lucky and got a personal tour in English. The rose garden is nice but quite small and since it is free to enter, it was too crowded during our visit, regular visitors plus several tour buses with tourist groups.

Good amount of Things to see, takes about 2 hrs or so if you go a bit slow. Includes a 30 min tour that's worth waiting for. A nice little historic museum to gawk at the lavish and awkward interiors of rich people's homes in olden times. Cribs: minor European royals edition. Rooms are mega cold tho. We literally left/rushed through the last sections because it was absolutely freezing inside.

The entrance fee of non guided tour is 6€ and it takes about 30mins to check out the building. The hall was beautiful and the building is well maintained.

You should definitely get into it. Especially if you want to see a boroque period architecture in Germany up close. Every room of the palace is very well designed. I recommend you to join the tour

Well worth a visit if you're in Bamberg. Takes about 30-45 minutes to walk round the rooms and it's only about 5 or 6 euro each. The main hall is impressive. Staff all very friendly.

Very big and luxurious palace. When I first visited I was wondering why does a relatively small city need a palace as big as the ones found in some royal capitals. Then I learned about the town's history as the seat of an HRE Prince Bishop which was an interesting history lesson.

If you are a art and history fan, I recommend buying ticket and going to neue residenz. Very aesthetic.

A beautiful and historic building again close to the old town. Is right next to the historic old court and Bamberg Cathedral. Although it looks really promising from outside we couldn’t manage time to visit inside. It has a beautiful garden with mostly roses in the inner yard. Next time we would be visiting inside too.

Didn’t go inside, though the interior looks stunning. Just as pretty on the outside with its baroque architecture. Interesting shape too to admire in an L shape enclosing the Domplatz. Right by other sites such as the old court and the Dom. Absolute must visit when in town!

It was as majestic as the surrounding buildings. It had a beautiful garden we explored. We did not go into the castle but the cathedral and courtyard nearby gave you a sense of mediaeval times. At the garden was a beautiful lookout over the city.

What a majestic and historic place! This rathaus is located at the heart of the city of Bamberg. The building was renovated in 1461. Also the mural painted on the wall was done in 1960. Must visit tourist place in Bamberg.

This Rathaus with beautiful view is located at the center of the city. It is one of the tourist attractions in Bamberg. Good place to visit in summertime

In history, first mentioned was built in 1387 and it was rebuilt between 1461 to 1467 and 1744 to 1756 by Johann Jakob Michael Küchenl. The façade was originally painted and created by Johann Anwander in 1755 and restored so many times, but in 1959 it was repainted again by Anton Greiner. It was stated in the history that the Bishop of Bamberg (that time) doesn't want to give any of his land to the citizens, then the citizen built on an artificial small island along river stream Linker Regnitzarm that marks between episcopal mountain town and bourgeois island town. Now, it is part of UNESCO World Heritage and one of the iconic landmarks in Bamberg that throng of tourists passes by here just to have pictures of the wonderful and meaningful Old Town Hall. A lots of coffee shops, pub, hotel and souvenirs surrounds it. A worth and informative visit in this place.

Absolutely stunning piece of architecture and the most historical building in Bamberg. Completely full with wonderful detailed paintings on the outside wall. Built over an arch bridge, the location is really beautiful. The river flows by and a chain of bridges located next adds more to its beauty, from where you can admire the building. It is mostly crowded and if you need a solo picture of the Rathaus or yourself then you have to come in the early hours of the morning.

One of the main tourist attractions in Bamberg - worth seeing but timing is the essence! Beautiful building with stunning exterior façade, very busy during the day as people are just passing by and there are also way too many restaurants in the proximity of the building having seating all the way up to the entrance. Very touristy place, so it's worth visiting early in the morning and have a chance to take a decent picture and walk without crowds. I visited the indoor exhibition of Meissen porcelain, which in my opinion was amazing. Something unusual to see. I was alone all the time during a self-guided visit spread out on both floors. Most information was available in German, only a few in English, no audio guide. The rococo hall was nice, offering some nice views of the river and the main cathedral of Bamberg. Entry fee was 6 EUR and I had to lock my backpack in the locker. Temporary ceramic exhibition at the basement was great as well showing beautiful pieces. Unfortunately none of the staff was speaking English which was unusual for a tourist place like this, however they made sure I enjoyed my visit as they provided me with some printed material in English. I was unable to visit the rococo hall at my first attempt, therefore it was okay for me to return a few hours later without paying again for a ticket. It was truly amazing to see the staff trying and helping! Worth visiting and enjoy a little moment of quietness in bustling city! Visited in July 2022.

One of the best attractions in Bamberg city. The altes Rathhaus is located in the heart of city. One can easily spend 2-3 hours here, as there are also some other attractions nearby.

A rare brewery museum very well explained

A nice little museum. If you are interested in beer, get in and have a view. There is a lot of good information and nice objects/posters to see. It is just 4 euro. It is a bit dusty, and i think kids will get bored.

If you're interested in Franconian beer and everything associated with it, this is the place for you. The copy of the Bavarian Purity Laws alone made it worth my time! It's not huge and could benefit from some more multilingual signage for some of the more interesting/complex/historical exhibitions but the sheer amount of breweriana under one roof makes it a worthwhile stop off. There's also a bar so you can put your education into practice! I should add it isn't suitable for anyone with mobility issues or who can't do a fair number if relatively steep stairs.

Unfortunately the museum does not open between December and March, but there was no place explaining that. All informations I had read (including the city map and the board in front of the museum) did not explain clearly the museum would be closed. Inclusive Google informed the museum would be OPEN between 11h and 17h and we saw other groups of tourist (German's ones) making the same mistake. So the communication was not good!

We had a free hour, and enjoyed this small, but interesting collection of tools, machines, and memorabilia associated with brewing beer in the region. At the end of the tour, you can pick up a commemorative bottle of Suds to enjoy in the adjacent monastery gardens.

An excellent museum in Bamberg, Germany. It is a traditional museum, so don’t expect video presentations and screens. The museum is currently mostly in the German language, but if you like beer and the brewing process it is very easy to follow. It also has a tremendous beer stein collection! The museum sits on top of the Michaelsberg on the site of an old medieval monastery. The walk up the hill can be tough on the legs (for the older and very young). I believe cars/taxis can come up as well. Still, the views of Bamberg cannot be missed! The monastery, museums, and cafes atop the hill are worth the walk. I would recommend the Brewery Museum to anyone visiting Bamberg! Prost!

It is fun to explore. Some of the streets are narrow. At one point, I didn't realize the river was at the end of one of the streets. I like the way the houses and churches are designed. There are lots of great restaurants and cafes in this area.

If you come to Bavaria, you can devote one day to this city. Those who love history will see and learn a lot of interesting things. There are many UNESCO cultural heritage monuments with a thousand-year history.

Bamberg is breathtaking town. We spent as family just one day here, but it's not enough... we're definitely coming back!

Wow what life in this old town, not many get here it's great. We were near the top just below the church, had a beer and chips and watched people go by, really good life to the place. Should have spent more time here but had to keep going

Bamberg, the beer capital of Germany We took the one hour drive to Bamberg, known for its amazing old town (Altstadt) and supposingly the Beer capital of Germany Parking was a bit of a challenge, wrong carpark and a 1 Kilometer walk to the old town district with its famous Dom! Lesson learned! Here a little overview hijacked from Dr. Google: Bamberg is a town in northern Bavaria, Germany, laid out over 7 hills where the Regnitz and Main rivers meet. Its old town preserves structures from the 11th to 19th centuries including the muraled Altes Rathaus (town hall), which occupies an island in the Regnitz reached by arched bridges. The Romanesque Bamberg Cathedral, begun in the 11th century, features 4 towers and numerous stone carvings. We did walk the entire length of this picturesque town and it was truly amazing, but I let the Pictures speak for itself! Enjoy this little photographic journey! A must do when visiting Bamberg. Entry to the cathedral is free, please be respectful when entering. There are lots of old buildings, good views and history to explore. Highly recommended.

A 09th century town with preserved medieval streets, walls and historic buildings. Also known as Franconian Rome, is a UNESCO world heritage site. Absolutely recommended to visit and at least stay one evening. It is an amazing, romantic, beautiful lovely small town always bustling with people with many bars and pubs around. Completely picturesque and vibrant with something for everyone. Absolutely worth all the time you will spend here.

Many places to walk and explore. Adequate parking available. Lots of opportunities for great photos. Good museums, food and shopping options available.

I came in the weekend of early summer. Too crowded everywhere. However the historical building is amazing. Great experience. Maybe to come in weekday instead? So, you have your privacy time to explore the buildings.

The Christmas market in Bamberg is one of the most beautiful and traditional in Germany. Located in the old city center, the fair takes place around the Church of St. Ghidoni and attracts thousands of visitors every year. The Bamberg Christmas Market offers a wide range of traditional products such as Christmas decorations, wooden and ceramic toys, scented candles and many other gifts perfect for the holiday season. You can also enjoy local specialties such as bratwurst and glühwein (spiced mulled wine) or taste different assortments of traditional cakes and sweets. The atmosphere of the fair is charming, with light garlands, vibrant lights and carols in the background. Brightly painted kiosks provide a picturesque setting, and the aroma of cinnamon and fresh scones fills the air. The Bamberg Christmas Market is open every day from the end of November until Christmas and is a perfect destination for those who want to enjoy the atmosphere of the winter holidays in a historic and charming city.

Wow… highly recommend a visit to the old city of Bamberg, a place of outstanding beauty

My favorite place for the special Rauch (smoky) bier from Bamberg. They serve the best traditional bier in Bamberg. A really old history with the bier production. Ambience is really awesome with those gothic style interiors within a medieval building. The people at the service are attentive and highly friendly. The serving time is very quick, considering the high work load they have. The food tastes really yummy and I would recommend the stuffed onion in combination with the smoked bier. We had a very nice and chill evening.

This place is like stepping back in time and it's all the better for it. Luckily the servers all know English and there is an English menu available. The smoked beer is what they are famous for. It isn't for everyone, but this it is for will not be able to get enough. The food is just as incredible as the beer. I strongly recommend the pork knuckle over the pork shoulder. There is just more crispy skin and tender meat on the knuckle. Prost.

We ordered the items from the Easter menu - Spargel soup and meat dishes. The vegetarian dish was also equally good. Highly recommend it for those looking for good portions and authentic German meals. The service was good despite the rush hour.

GREAT !!! the restaurant itself it's the tipical bayerishe place so good good, and then the food was incredibly good we really enjoyed it! we went on a saturday, there was quite some pople but fine we managed to find a table! i think they change the menu every week so i guess depending on when you go you'll find one thing or the other, but i guess always good! also they have a vegetarian option available which is great :) they have this smoked beer, quite interesting to taste i liked it!!! and then if i am not mistaken as in many other german places you can only pay cash... about the price i mean german prices it is ok. but really if you are in Bamberg give it a try it is worth it!!! :p

I got to honour the best Veggie Casserole at this place. Highly recommend it. Lively vibes overall. We did not have the reservation but got lucky to get a table for 8 on spot. The staff was really really friendly and humble. ℹ️You must get a reservation in advance as it was extremely busy on a Saturday Suggestion to the restaurant: please keep some hand tissues in the WC as the dryer wasn’t so useful in the cold weather

Classic beerhall vibes and integrated into the old cityscape. There's a nice garden/patio out back. Only two beers on draft at the time, one of which was their Marzen which is always a great choice. If you aren't at a table, you can grab a beer from the small window in the main hallway. Snagged some bottles and a glass the next day before leaving Bamberg. A bit touristy and pricey, as bottles of their beer were twice as much as they sell for at stores in Bamberg, but they had a special unfiltered Helles!

We really had a good time there. I took my parents who’s visiting Germany there and they love it! We didn’t book the table and just randomly walked in, got lucky to have a table, but I’d recommend you to call and make a reservation. The place was a bit too loud and crowded but the food was really good! They came out as a big portion at a fair price. We had these 4 dishes, one beer, 2 juices, and water, it costs only 70€ for 4 of us! The service was really nice and friendly as well. I highly recommend you to try this place in Bamberg.

Smoked beer is pretty nice, unique flavor with strong smoky notes. Surprisingly, the pork is so tender! And of course, skin is super crispy. We also ordered a special menu, a bread roll in mushroom cream sauce, which also tastes great.

Excellent location in a medieval building with great selection of originals beers. Bamberg is a fabulous historic town well worth a visit. Good atmosphere, friendly service and good food. One less star because there are only few vegetarian options. Warmly recommended!

Very nice, server very friendly. Made reservations for 9. Ate a wonderful meal, shared several plates with friends, everything was delicious. Had their famous smoked bear which was very good. Must be aware that they only take cash!

Historic place in Bamberg. Everyone who's interested in Beer has to visit this place. Tasty classic food options, even a vegetarian one, but it's obviously inspired by the Bavarian and Franken kitchen. Heavy on meat and sauerkraut, which goes perfectly with their smoked beer options, those come directly out of wooden barrels. At least the smoked Märzen. If you visit Bamberg, don't miss this opportunity.

The original smoked beer. It was a nice change of pace to drink, and had some campfire characteristics. I did really enjoy their Bamberg Onion, I forget the actual name! It was delicious with the beer gravy and potatoes. Definitely a unique spot and must visit in Bamberg.

This is a must visit if in Bamberg, and if you like the distinctive taste of the “Rauchbier” (smoked beer, which tastes and smells like bacon, literally). Prices are very reasonable and the food too is very tasty. I had the stuffed onion with minced meat and it was delicious. One of the best traditional German/Bavarian meals I had in a while

Ordered smoked beer and stuffed/roasted onion. Hands down the best food I had in Germany so far, and it's my 7th day in Germany. It was a cozy tavern and I loved the atmosphere.

I didn’t like the smoked beer. It tasted funny- like mead, burnt honey like taste. We ordered some food. They were ok. Service wasn’t bad amidst language difficulties- they don’t speak English. We were not allowed to pay by card. Fortunately we had bit of money just enough for food… so couldn’t leave a tip 😊 the lady looked unhappy… difficult to understand why card payments are not allowed this day and time, people hardly carry money these days…

Astonishingly good, authentic food, a horrible low alcohol beer and very interesting to good smoked beers. While I really enjoyed the ruby smoked beer, the low alcohol version tasted like dish washing suds. Interesting to know what they did back then - but not a great taste. 😁

The Overall ambiance of this restaurant was really great. It played well into the age and location. The food was incredible and very heavy. The Smoked beer is very much a taste to get used to. It was not for me but I am glad to have tried it.

We came in to try the smoked beer. My husband loved it! He said it was similar in taste to a smoky meat flavor, not a burned taste. I thought it was ok and I also enjoyed the red beer. It was a little crowded today but we still had a nice time. Afterwards we went next door for a pretzel.

Good food and service with excellent beer. Servers are fast and courteous. Menus are in German and English, so it careers to tourists although it is a bit out of the way. Charming dining rooms with the classic Gasthof feel. There is also a souvenir shop in the interior courtyard.

A stunning building complex that dated to the 11th century and until now still standing. This once-glorifies palace is an impressive half-timbered pile in Gothic with Renaissance styling and a spacious courtyard with a cobble stone. This is beside the Bamberg Cathedral and within in the vicinity of Bamberg Museum. As my friend living in Bamberg told me that, this is where one of the location from the movie "The Three Musketeers 2011" filmed.

Another classical medieval era building. Worth a visit if you love old historic buildings and architecture. Built in 16th century, still carries the fragments of history with a cobblestone courtyard and a large half-timbered building decorated with big baskets of blooming flowered. Standing there will definitely make you feel going back in time. A part of the movie Three Musketeers was filmed here in this courtyard. Located next to Bamberg cathedral and New residence so, you cannot miss this place.

Beautiful medieval yard with eye-catching exterior of half-timbered houses. It is free to visit and wander around but I did not particularly enjoy my time here - there was a huge podium built in the middle of the courtyard blocking the views, also many cars were parked here, huge trash cans and temporary construction housing were visible - making it less attractive than I could have been. I understand that might have been there only due to festivities. Nevertheless I did enjoy the stunning front façade of a building that is currently housing the historical museum (can be entered for a fee) and the views of the cathedrals towers. There are some interesting engravings on the front gate to the court yard that are not to be missed. Public toilets are available at the premises. Visited in July 2022.

As of February 2024, It was being remodeled. But tourists can walk inside the church watching the view. Scenary of the downtown is quite nice. It is around more than 20 minutes from downtown. Because it is small town, it's not burdensome. But It is still totally up to you whether to visit in here or not.

We enjoyed our hike up to this lovely monastery. The views are amazing and the gardens around it are worth the trip to the top. The renovations prevented us from going into the buildings.

Probably the best panoramic view of Bamberg. There's a nice cafe on top of the hill as well. Monastery's currently under construction.

The actual monastery was covered in scaffolding and under construction when we visited Bamberg in August. However, I still recommend climbing up the hill to the gardens for a great view over Bamberg.

I still feel the same adrenaline as I had felt during my first visit to this Monastery. The best view of Bamberg. It takes a good hike to come here but once you are on the top, you have a breathe taking view of Bamberg with the cathedral and residence shining in the background. Although the church has been closed for several years due to the restoration but it has a very beautiful, well maintained garden. It is refreshing to be up there. There are three cafe - restaurants on-site to refresh yourself one of which has a cool Biergarten with an amazing view. I would still recommend a coffee and cake.

Hilltop monastery with the second best views over Bamberg (after Spezial Keller beer garden). Lovely tranquil setting to enjoy the view while wondering through the gardens. Unfortunately the majority of the site is closed until further notice as a result of restoration work so you can't access very much. The church was off-limits when we went but nonetheless the garden areas are nice. The Franconian Brewing Museum is also based on site. I highly recommend stopping at one of the beer gardens for lunch or a drink as it's a beautiful setting.

Good for a walk from Dom to monastery. Scenic walk down to city center available. I recommend to book a table at "Da Francesco". Great food in a beautiful location.

Cute castle that comprises a beautiful, expansive park with old linden trees, citrus plants, a pond, a cascade (the water plays start every hour for about 8 minutes), several statues, and a café. The interior of the castle has about twelve rooms open to visitors which one can visit only with a guided tour in German (there are leaflets with information about each room available for foreigners). Although not impressive and with many of the original objects/decorations lost or destroyed and then replaced with copies, the rooms are still worth seeing. Even though I visited on Saturday, it wasn't crowded and there was also ample parking space.

I didn't go inside but toured the gardens that are absolutely stunning even after the removal of most of the statues. Very worthwhile stop. Just be careful not to get locked in after they close. We did... and had to jump the wall, not to bad but would be a problem with children.

I cannot describe the beauty of the place in words! Such a serene and pristine place. The main castle building is exquisite, though I could not enter the inside since there were construction works going on. The surrounding park is such a treat for the eye, specially because of the yellow & orange colored leaves of the fall. I had long enjoyable walks throughout the whole area, it is very picturesque. Highly recommended place for visiting.

The great small castle is not very crowded. I drove by here several times on my way between Bamberg and Bayreuth and never stopped in until today we spontaneously decided to have a look at it. Parking costs 1€ and the tour cost 5€ per person.

This whole city is amazing. Each little street has many many things to offer. Its got architecture, beer gardens, vineyards, local Resturants, medieval Churches, memories of renaissance and many many bridges. Its a must to see for every traveler.

We were drawn to this museum because of the current exhibitions but it also has a large collection of objects relating to the town’s history including some artefacts found in their local rivers. I didn’t ask if there would be translations for each piece in English and this proved not to be the case. All the museums and galleries I had visited in Germany to date had had excellent translations. I was given a booklet which broadly outlined the key points for each room of their permanent exhibition but there was nothing provided in English for their temporary exhibitions. This would have greatly enhanced our visit as there were some very interesting pieces in the collection.
