S.O. Davies: Labour maverick and Merthyr MP remembered

February sees the 40th anniversary of the death of former Merthyr Tydfil MP S.O. Davies.

He had represented the constituency as a Labour MP since 1934 but at the age of 84 he was told he was too old to stand in the 1970 General Election.

Voters disagreed because he stood against the official Labour candidate as an independent and won a famous victory.

Robert Griffiths, general secretary of the Communist Party of Great Britain and a Labour historian, who has written and lectured about Mr Davies, looked back at his life with Vaughan Roderick for BBC Radio Wales.
