I left a note on his dresser
And my old wedding ring
With these few goodbye words
How can I sing?
Goodbye old sleepy head
I'm packing you in like I said

Take care of everything
I'm leaving my wedding ring
Don't look for me
I'll get a hand
Remember, darling
Don't smoke in bed

Don't look for me
I'll get a hand
Remember, darling
Don't smoke in bed

Nina is singing about knowing her husband is cheating on her. She knows he smokes in bed after sex and has found some evidence to confirm her suspicions. Or it involves a warning about leaving a trail of what you have been up to. To smoke in bed is to leave a butt lying around, to potentially set light the mattress- a metaphor for burning ( and destroying) the matrimonial vow. Her voice carries the tinge of disappointment and regret, bitterness and suppressed anger. But also the message that even if one gets deceived one can still move on and find safer waters- to love again or even marry again (I'll find a hand- in marriage). In some recordings towards the end her voice carries such pathos, such pain one wonders if she has experienced this greatest of betrayals- wonderful really cause otherwise how would she sing such beautiful music? Suffering ain't so bad when its changed into something so memorable. At least for those of us just listening...

Wow, Blixen, I never thought of it like that. I just always thought that it was a failed marriage, and she knew it would never work. So she just left. But she still cared about him, so she told him to not smoke in bed because a lot of people fall asleep while having a smoke in bed, which can lead to a fire. There doesn't necessarily have to be infidelity involved, it's just that the marriage didn't work, so she's leaving him. But she still cares for him, which is why she gives him this last piece of advice. This sort of makes sense of the line "I'm packing you in like I said". To me, that says that she's talked to him about the unhappy marriage, and told him that she might leave, and if she did, she would pack him in(in the covers of the bed) before she leaves.

Techno Ted
Audioslave
Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Dreamwalker
Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Head > Heels
Ed Sheeran
“Head > Heels” is a track that aims to capture what it feels like to experience romance that exceeds expectations. Ed Sheeran dedicates his album outro to a lover who has blessed him with a unique experience that he seeks to describe through the song’s nuanced lyrics.
