For one thing, Pioneer has been different every year that I have attended, it was a new chapter that started directly after COVID-19 hit during my eighth-grade year. Although it is a great performing arts school, the student community isn't very inclusive compared to my observations at other schools. The programs are great as well as the opportunities in any STEM subjects, however, that is very dependent on how certain teachers educate. The school is very sports-oriented, which I enjoy as I am a student-athlete myself. I have been captain of the wrestling team since my sophomore year and have been tasked with restoring the program to its former glory. I didn't have any help from anyone in the school, only the coach who was not involved with Pioneer aside from being an alumni. Nevertheless, it did survive and continues to thrive due to my coaches and I taking the reigns. overall, pioneer is a safe environment for learning but not the easiest environment for fitting in.
My time at Pioneer was overall positive. I had a few really amazing teachers who truly cared about their students and their success. However, the academic load can be quite rigorous, especially in some of the AP classes. One thing I’ve noticed is that there is a strong school spirit here, and many of the kids get excited about school games and events. The students here are also generally accepting and open-minded, and I received a warm welcome despite joining half-way through junior year.
My experience with Pioneer was as good as could be with the first year clouded by the Covid pandemic. It’s a safe environment and the faculty did a very good job guiding the students in resuming their studies and prepared them for college. The AP courses my son took were challenging and a good way for him to prepare for what he’ll see at university level.
