Colin Gregory Palmer Grey[1] (born: January 30, 1989 (1989-01-30) [age 35]), better known online as CGP Grey (or simply Grey), is an Irish-American YouTuber based in London, England. He uploads animated, educational videos about technology, geography, history, politics and science. He has a vlog channel, CGPGrey2, and a gaming channel, CGP Play.

Channel history[]

CGP Grey joined YouTube in August 2010 and uploaded his first video on October 6, 2010. His channel rose to notability after his video The Difference Between the United Kingdom, Great Britain, and England Explained went viral. He began animating his videos in the stick-figure style with his Copyright: Forever Less One Day video.

His second channel, CGPGrey2, was created on July 19, 2011. It features vlogs and things that would not fit on the main channel. His third channel, CGP Play, was created on September 17th, 2015, and is for gaming videos. These include games such as American Truck Simulator and Mario Kart 8.

Controversy[]

Copyright dispute with Vlogging Through History[]

On April 9, 2023, CGP Grey gave a copyright strike to Vlogging Through History (VTH), a channel run by Chris Mowery. Most of Mowery's channel consisted of videos of him reacting to videos that were history or education related. Mowery used his background as a historian to give insight into the videos he reacted to. The videos struck by CGP Grey were “Rules for Rulers - CGP Grey Reaction" (uploaded on March 29, 2023), and "DOES YOUR FLAG FAIL? Reaction to CGP Grey" (uploaded on April 7, 2023). Both videos were reaction videos to the work of CGP Grey. Before the strike, Grey tweeted about his dislike for reaction videos and the reaction genre. The strikes were unique, as most channels that VTH reacted to had a positive response to his reactions, and no channel had ever struck VTH before. Mowery believed that his reactions were within the bounds of fair use, and was defended by YouTubers like AlternateHistoryHub, UsefulCharts and others.[2]

Ultimately the videos were restored and the copyright strikes were withdrawn. Flag Ranking video was restored on April 24, 2023.[3] The VTH reaction to Grey's Rules for Rulers video was also restored on May 8, 2023.[4]
