A MUST HAVE for Genesis fans!
5 Stars
A MUST HAVE for Genesis fans!
Among live rock albums, especially in the genre of 70s-80s progressive rock, this ranks at the top in my book - right along with "Exit . . . Stage Left" by Rush. Genesis, like Rush, took their live performances seriously (if not themselves). If you are a Genesis/Phil Collins fan and you don't have this album, give it a go - you can't go wrong.

I was listening to this album again tonight and was struck by two things. 1. Phil Collins has never really been given credit for his musical brilliance as displayed in this work with Genesis, and 2. there are times when you need to turn off the "shuffle" feature on the iPod and listen to an album straight through.

This work reminds me of opera. It builds and slows emotionally, using the instrumental portions to create anticipation for the poignant lyrics which follow. A deep range of emotions play out; love revealed as complicated. And, remember, this is live and Phil pulls it all off while literally setting the rhythm of the show as the drummer.

Brilliant, beautiful. Perfect for anyone with a heart for romance and an ear for how music can express such things.

I love Genesis and this album (I have it on cassette, so this was sort of upgrading). Only complaint is with the one studio side--I wanted the original one with Open Door, Me And Virgil and Paperlate. Not that Watcher Of The Skies and the others are bad songs, but I want the ones I know (especially Me And Virgil--it would make one hell of a great video).

This was always my favorite of the live albums of Genesis. I recently bought this to replace my old cassette of the album. It is a great collection of live versions of classic Genesis. This album features what is probably the best version of "In the Cage."

This is "Three Sides Live" The way I heard it back in the 80's. No offense to the brits intended but the album IS called "Three Sides Live" so having a fourth live side always confused me. Plus finding "Open Door" and "Me and Virgil" along with the much underrated "Paperlate" in one place is impossible unless you buy one of the BOX SETS.

This version truly deserves a remastering.

Album is great but thought I was ordering US edition with Paperlate, Open Door etc on 4th side. I planned to get this European edition as well, but am desperate to find the original US edition on CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars GENESIS AU TOP
Reviewed in France on July 2, 2021
Pour moi, c'est la meilleure période du groupe (ABACAB), même si j'adore d'autres de leurs albums : The Lamb, The trick of the tail, And then they were 3.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful Performances
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 6, 2012
Like other listeners, I have been listening to this album for the last 30 years and never get tired hearing tracks such as In the Cage, Fountain of Salmacis and It. The mixing and sound production seems to catch the essence of the live shows and it certainly catches the excitement and powerful sounds of guitars, drums, bass pedals and keyboards. Tony Banks has to highly praised on this album for his solo breaks and excellent accompanying skills.

Whilst I prefer Disc 2, as Abacab represented Genesis on it's continued transformation from progressive rock to more pop based songs, this process starting in 1978 with "And then there were three", disc 1 has some delightful moments, such as "Behind the Lines".

What has continually annoyed me about this cd and earlier versions is that the indexing of tracks on CD2 are wrong. There is no break from the beginning of Fountain of Salmacis right through to the end of Watcher of the skies! Very annoying and as stated by others, has been mentioned by time and time again. Still no change. This problem also occurs on Seconds Out (1977) with no track break between Dance on a Volcano and then Los Endos.

Having said that, great performances capturing the sound of that period. Compare this cd with Live Over Europe, and one can easily hear the difference quickly, "Three Sides Live" being a warmer, thrilling and a wholly more convincing rendition of good pieces.
