British missionaries begin to settle in New Zealand.

1833

James Busby becomes British Resident.

1835-1839

He Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tireni — the Declaration of Independence of the United Tribes of New Zealand — is signed by 52 northern rangatira (chiefs). James Busby aids in the process, and it is acknowledged by the United Kingdom. It is signed on several occasions between 28 October 1835 and 22 July 1839.

1839

The British government instructs Captain William Hobson, a naval officer who had reported on New Zealand in 1837, to negotiate obtaining sovereignty over New Zealand and set up a British colony.

1840

The original Tiriti o Waitangi document is signed by Hobson and rangatira at Waitangi in the Bay of Islands on 6 February. Copies are also sent to various parts of New Zealand over a 7-month period for other rangatira to sign.

Hobson proclaims British sovereignty over New Zealand on 21 May.

1841

Te Tiriti o Waitangi documents narrowly escape destruction by fire when the government offices at Auckland burn down. Record clerk George Eliott arrives just in time to rescue the Treaty and the Seal of the Colony. Afterwards he deposits the Treaty in the Colonial Secretary’s Office, where it remains until at least 1865.

1869

The Legislative Council asks for a reproduction of all the Treaty documents — plus its rough draft — to be laid on the table. But it's reported that the draft is not on record in either the Native Department or the Colonial Secretary’s Office. The text and translation are published for the Legislative Council with notes by WB Baker, translator to the Native Office. Notes on the draft of the Treaty appear to have come to light during the next few years.

1877

The government publishes facsimiles of various documents relating to the Treaty including the Declaration of Independence 1835, the draft notes of the Treaty and the 9 sheets of te Tiriti o Waitangi.

1908

Te Tiriti o Waitangi is discovered in the basement of the Government Buildings “in damaged condition presumably rat eaten” by Dr Thomas Morland Hocken, a physician and historian. The Department of Internal Affairs takes charge of the Treaty, and it is sent to the Director of the Dominion Museum to see if it can be restored.

1913

The original sheets are glued on to new canvas and — with the aid of the 1877 facsimiles — the portions that had been damaged by rats are reproduced. Once restored it's placed in “a specially made tin cylinder” which is kept in the strong room of the Department of Internal Affairs in the old Government Buildings.

1927

Discussions between the Alexander Turnbull Library, General Assembly Library and the Department of Internal Affairs begin about possible public display of te Tiriti o Waitangi.

1931

A Memoranda to the Minister of Internal Affairs suggests moving te Tiriti o Waitangi outside of Wellington following the 1931 Hawkes Bay earthquake.

1940

Te Tiriti o Waitangi is displayed to the public for the first time at Waitangi as part of the centennial commemorations.

1957

With the passage of the Archives Act 1957, the Treaty becomes an official archive subject to the provisions of the Act and custody is given to the National Archives in the Department of Internal Affairs.

1961

On 30 January, the Treaty is transferred to the Alexander Turnbull Library for “suitable display under proper conditions to prevent deterioration until such time as the National Archives had its own Exhibition Room”. The Treaty is installed in a showcase built for it in the entrance hall of the library and is unveiled by the Minister of Internal Affairs on 6 February.

c.1977

Conservators working at the Alexander Turnbull Library remove the cloth backing when it is found to be causing damage to the documents.

c.1978

The Treaty is removed from public display and returned to the National Archives.

1979

Conservation staff at National Archives carry out repairs on some of the documents with the advice of SM Cockerell, a prominent British conservator.

1981

A sealed package containing the Treaty of Waitangi is deposited in the safe of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand by National Archives.

1991

The Archives New Zealand's Constitution Room officially opens on 9 December and the 9 sheets of te Tiriti o Waitangi — along with other founding documents of New Zealand — are put on permanent display for the first time.

1997

The Treaty is inscribed on the UNESCO Register of the Memory of the World in recognition of its universal significance in world history.

2017

The Treaty — along with the Women's Suffrage Petition and He Whakaputanga — moves from Archives New Zealand's Constitution Room to a state-of-the-art exhibition at the National Library, He Tohu.
