Chevy Chase became well-known after his run on Saturday Night Live. When he left the show, Chase planned on having a successful film career. Chase would go on to have some success, but also a lot of failures.

These failures are what Howard Stern believed was behind Chase's mean comments towards the host during his interview with Larry King.

Stern decided to confront Chase by calling his house live on the air. However, when Chase actually answered the phone, his honesty put an immediate end to the call.

Chevy Chase Told Howard Off On The Air When The Radio Host Called His Home

In 1994, Stern decided to call Chevy Chase at his house live on air. Stern was joined by his co-host Robin Quivers and actor Richard Belzer.

When Stern first dialed the number, a woman answered the phone. Stern and Belzer assumed this was Chase's housekeeper. Stern informed the woman that he was on the air and asked her if Chase would speak to them on the radio.

The woman put Stern on hold and returned several minutes later.

"This is not Chevy Chase's house," she told Stern.

Stern protested her assertion and insisted he knew this was, in fact, Chase's house.

"I don't understand why you're saying that," Stern said. "I know it is and Richard Belzer is here, his good friend."

The woman then put Stern on hold again. While they were waiting, Belzer asked Stern who gave him Chase's home phone number.

"A very good source," Stern told Belzer. "I can't say who it is."

Stern became impatient with waiting for the woman to return, so he asked Quivers what she thought he should do.

"I say call back," Quivers suggested.

Stern then asked his producer, Gary Dell'Abate, to call Chase's number instead. When Dell'Abate called the number, he informed the person on the other end that he was with Stern's show and asked if Chase wanted to talk on air.

Dell'Abate was also told this wasn't Chase's house. In response, he told the person that he called the number yesterday and Chase himself answered the phone. He then asked if he could speak with Chase' wife, Jayni.

To everyone's surprise, Chase himself then answered Stern's call. Stern asked Chase why he was "badmouthing" him. Jayni then hopped on the line and attempted to defend her husband.

"Listen, he's not badmouthing you," Jayni began, before getting cut off by Chase.

"Jayni, get off the phone please," Chase told his wife. "I want to deal with this."

"Okay fine," Stern replied.

"See you later," Chase said before hanging up.

"That was some anger," Belzer said.

"That was real anger," Stern agreed.

Chevy Previously Spoke Badly About Howard Stern, Causing The Host To Roast Him On Air

The reason Stern called Chase's house was to confront him about comments he made on Larry King Live that same year. Stern himself commented on Chase's remarks during his radio show.

During Chase's interview, King took calls from the viewers. One caller just said, "Howard Stern," before hanging up.

King attempted to move on to another call, but Chase had some things to say about Stern.

"That guy, Howard Stern, boy he's an ass," Chase said. "I can't stand him."

"Have you seen him?" King asked.

"I've never seen him, but I've heard him on the radio," Chase said. "He's very funny. He's got the brain of an egg timer."

Stern then questioned why Chase would say that when he previously appeared on the show. Quivers then chimed in and said she didn't think Chase liked him when he appeared. Stern wondered why Chase wouldn't say that to his face.

Another caller then played Stern a clip of Chase commenting on him during a commercial break. The clip was made available courtesy of a satellite feed from the caller, who recorded it.

Chevy Told Howard He Was Mad At Him Because Of Comments He Made About One Of His Co-Stars

Years after Stern called Chase's house, the two ended their feud when the actor called the show. During their conversation, Stern asked Chase why he badmouthed him on Larry King Live. Chase told Stern it was because of mean comments the radio host made about Julianne Phillips while she was divorcing Bruce Springsteen. At the time, Chase was working with Phillips on the film Fletch Lives.

According to Chase, Phillips was "crying every day" on set, because she was "really going through it." It was during this time Chase said that Stern interviewed him. Chase said Stern asked him a bunch of questions about Phillips' sex life, and he thought Stern was "an ass." However, the two decided to put the past behind them, with Stern telling Chase that he enjoyed his work.
