Biography

Rt. Hon. Arthur Hill was born circa 1601, the son of Sir Moyses Hill and Alice MacDonnel. [1][2]

He married, firstly, Anne Bolton, daughter of Sir Richard Bolton.

Child:

  1. Moyses (who married his cousin).


He married, secondly, Mary Parsons, daughter of Sir William Parsons, 1st Bt. and Elizabeth Lany.

Children included:

  1. William, the eldest of the 3 sons, succeeded his half-brother Moyses who had died without leaving any sons. Wm. was M.P. for Ballyshannon. He was also married twice, (1) to Eleanor, daughter of Dr. Michael Boyle, Lord Chancellor of Ireland, and they had an only son Michael. (2) to Mary, daughter of Sir Marcus Trevor, and they had two sons, William died in 1693 and was succeeded by his eldest son Michael. Since his son JOHN FLED TO SWITZERLAND,there is no more about him in this Irish petigree. He is simply mentioned under "two sons of William & Mary".

He gained the rank of Colonel in the Royalist Regiment. He fought in the English Civil War. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.). He held the office of Constable of Hillsborough Fort in 1660. He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.)

Arthur lived in Hillsborough, County Down, Ireland. This town was once known as Cromlyn, but derived its present name from a Castle erected there by this Arthur Hill, during the reign of Charles I (1625-49).

Then at the restoration it was made a Royal Fortress by Charles II, who made Sir Arthur and his heirs hereditary constables, with 20 warders & a well appointed garrison.[3]

He died in April 1663.
