After revealing her multiple sclerosis diagnosis in October 2022, Buffy the Vampire Slayer vet Emma Caulfield is offering an update on her health.
Caulfield (who is now going by Emma Caulfield Ford, following her 2017 marriage to actor Mark Leslie Ford) tells People that her symptoms remain mild. She has not suffered from fatigue or muscle weakness, and she has not needed medication.
“I’m very, very fortunate,” she says. “But I’m also aware that, with MS, this could all change tomorrow…. I’m stable — and I’ve made it a huge priority to do things so I stay that way.” That includes avoiding direct sunlight and committing to a daily workout routine.
She tells People that she’s recently developed a sensitivity to cacophonous noise, which may be related to her diagnosis, but otherwise feels “quite good, and that’s good news.”
Caulfield announced her diagnosis in a 2022 interview with Vanity Fair after secretly battling the disorder for more than a decade. It all began in 2010 when she woke up one morning to find the left side of her face had gone numb. After an MRI and neurological exams, an official MS diagnosis soon followed.
The actress told Vanity Fair that she initially hid her condition because she “didn’t want to give anyone the opportunity to not hire me.” Caulfield, whose father also has MS, shared that she decided to ultimately go public with her diagnosis because she was “so tired of not being honest.”
Caulfield recently reprised her role as Anya on Audible’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer Audiobook offshoot Slayers, and will next be seen in Disney+’s WandaVision spinoff Agatha: Darkhold Diaries (due out in late 2024).
I like her character very much.
Anya had no filter and gave voice to all the feelings and thoughts we as viewers had.
Glad to hear her symptoms have not progressed and that she is still working.

From Once More With Feeling (Buffy Musical)
Bunnies aren’t just cute like everybody supposes,
They’ve got them hoppy legs and twitchy little noses. And what’s with all the carrots-? What do they need such good eyesight for anyway? Bunnies, bunnies it must be bunnies! 🐇
…or maybe midgets.
Why would she avoid sunlight when vitamin D helps prevent MS?
She’s undoubtedly receiving treatment and advice directly from people involved in her case and tailored to her situation; which is what everyone should do instead of following what celebrities or others in the media say, innocently or not. Take what she shares about herself for what it is and let her handle her own medical condition.
Nah OP is right. That makes zero sense. Sunlight exposure is correlated with reduced MS severity. https://www.nationalmssociety.org/About-the-Society/News/Study-Suggests-Role-for-Sunlight-Exposure-in-Reduc
“Correlated with” does not mean anything for an individual.
I also have MS and take medication that increases the chance of developing skin cancer. My dermatologist, neurologist, and pharmacist all stated I should be careful with the sun as well.
MS symptoms become worse when we get overheated. Vitamins D3 is a benefit from sunshine , but we have to balance that with becoming overheated.
She makes me laugh, her acting is wonderful to watch! Sorry she is going through this, but what a positive attitude. Now, I admire her ;)
And her Wandavision was fun too… I hope she is in the Agatha show!
I wish her well with her autoimmune disease. I also have MS , diagnosed in 2001. I didn’t need meds either for awhile but my symptoms worsened a bit which led me to begin meds. I recommend every MSer find a MS specialist and work to create a treatment course that works for them. I am surprised that she hasn’t had any fatigue , numbness which are classic and often first symptoms.
Sending you prayers, I was diagnosed in 2010 and seemed to go down hill quickly. In six years I could no longer work and had real problems with balance and joint pain. Brain fog was really bad sometimes. I took rebif and had a lot of problems and had to quit. I have been on techfadera (not spelled right) for a few years and have several side effects. I felt lost and decided to quit my meds due to side effects. Our care provider introduced me to Ayurvedic treatment. I had a total decline of all symptoms including vision problems, numbness and others. Sometimes, i totally forget i ever had MS. Visit Natural Herbs Centre web-site I am very pleased with this treatment. I eat well, sleep well and exercise regularly. God bless all MS Warriors
