Top 10 Fastest Electric Cars From 0-60 MPH That We’ve Tested

Exploring the bonkers world of G-force bending EV acceleration times.

William Irvin LewisWriter

For most mere mortal cars, acceleration is best measured in terms of a 0-60 time. But when it comes to the fastest EVs on the planet, a better metric may be sustained gravitic force. At 3.0 seconds to 60 mph—or less—a vehicle exerts roughly the same g forces on a human as the earth does when the same person is free falling. The vehicles on this list of the fastest EVs to 60 mph MotorTrend has tested don't feel as if they're accelerating down the road so much as they're dropping you off a horizontal cliff, then. Without further ado, here's our list of the fastest EVs to 60 mph we've strapped our test gear to. We have a feeling it's going to take you more than 3.0 seconds to explore.

10. 2022 Rivian R1S Launch Edition: 0–60 MPH in 3.2 Seconds

When we first tested the 2022 Rivian R1S Launch Edition , the three-row capable EV SUV was on less-than-ideal all-terrain tires. It still blew through the quarter mile in 11.8 seconds at 111.6 mph. This meant peak acceleration to 60 mph was equal to the force of gravity. The R1S exhibited similarly jaw dropping performance off-road , making it and its R1T stablemate some of the best all-around performance machines we've ever tested. The unerring practicality of its storage spaces and frunk also help make the R1S SUV worth the roughly $75,000 price you'll pay for a decently optioned vehicle.

2022 Rivian R1S Specs

Curb Weight: 7,091 lbs

¼ Mile Time: 11.8 seconds at 111.6 mph

Motor Layout: Four motor, two front and two rear

Maximum Horsepower: 835 hp

9. 2023 BMW iX M60: 0–60 MPH in 3.2 Seconds

It's said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but the 2023 BMW iX M60 challenges that cliche forcefully. While its interior and exterior design leave plenty to be desired, it could be said that the iX M60 has it where it counts , with impressive performance and driving dynamics. In terms of acceleration, the IX M60 is very quick for an SUV, with 0-60 times matching that of the R1S, with even faster quarter mile stats.

2023 BMW iX M60 Specs

Curb Weight: 5,815 lbs

¼ Mile Time: 11.5 seconds at 121.6 mph

Motor Layout: Dual motor, one front, one rear

Maximum Horsepower: 516 hp

Maximum Torque: 564 lb-ft

8. 2023 Kia EV6 GT: 0–60 MPH in 3.2 Seconds

The 2023 Kia EV6 GT stands in stark contrast to the iX M60, with beautiful lines and the same performance for far less cost. Proudly proclaimed by Kia to out-accelerate a Ferrari Roma and Lamborghini Huracan, the EV6's driftable AWD driving dynamics even stand out from other Kia models. The price for being the most powerful and fastest accelerating Kia ever is a stated range of only 206 miles, which is far from great for an EV priced at over sixty grand.

7. 2022 Rivian R1T Launch Edition: 0–60 MPH in 3.1 Seconds

The 2022 Rivian R1T Launch Edition is our favorite electric pickup for reasons besides its insane performance on and off the road, but its incredible acceleration and handling abilities certainly help. The R1T is a practical, usable pickup that can match some of the very best sports cars on pavement and the very best purpose-built trucks off-road. Crazy performance is increasingly common in the EV world, but our 2022 Truck of the Year brings much more to the table than just being quick through the quarter mile.

6. 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1: 0–60 MPH in 3.0 Seconds

The current fastest accelerating electric truck from 0-60 in our testing is the 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 , with a peak 0-60 G load of 96 percent the force of gravity. This is achieved on a vehicle which weighs roughly 9,000 pounds. The purposeful absurdity of the GMC Hummer EV starts at how alarmingly quick it is, and intensifies from there. Special features and playful gimmicks abound, from the truck's ability to crab walk diagonally to its removable T-tops and liftable suspension via Extract Mode . While slower than the R1T over the quarter mile, the Hummer isn't about practicality as much as it simply masters bombastry. Perhaps the most Hummer feature of all is that it manages to be so incredibly inefficient for an EV.

2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 Specs

Curb Weight: 8,976 lbs

¼ Mile Time: 11.7 seconds at 105.4 mph

Motor Layout: Tri-motor, one front, two rear

Maximum Horsepower: 1,000 hp

Maximum Torque: 1,200 lb-ft

5. 2022 Mercedes-AMG EQS 4Matic+ Sedan: 0–60 MPH in 3.0 Seconds

The top Mercedes EV from a luxury and performance standpoint, for now at least, is the 2022 Mercedes-AMG EQS . It's loaded with an array of cutting-edge technology and equipment that would have historically debuted on the automaker's preeminent luxury gasoline-powered luxury sedan, the S-Class, underscoring the importance of the EQS to the marque's future. The EQS comes with numerous high-end luxury features, including massaging seats, 15 speaker audio, and a voice activated infotainment system, but it's also one of the fastest electric cars from 0-60 on the market.

4. 2022 Audi RS E-Tron GT: 0–60 MPH in 2.9 Seconds

Ten second cars are now on sale to the public, and one of the prettiest examples of these electron-motivated missiles is the 2022 Audi RS E-Tron GT . Gorgeous bodywork clothes a powertrain that's all business, making the E-Tron GT the fastest electric car Audi produces for the time being. The sub 11-second quarter mile time is made possible by excellent launch traction and a solid 522 combined horsepower from its dual motor AWD system. At less than three seconds from 0-60 miles per hour, the peak acceleration force the E-Tron GT pulls during that sprint is 97 percent as strong as the force of gravity.

2022 Audi RS E-Tron GT Specs

Curb Weight: 5,151 lbs

¼ Mile Time: 10.9 seconds at 129.0 mph

Motor Layout: Dual motor, one front, one rear

3. 2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring Performance: 0–60 MPH in 2.7 Seconds

Tesla got out to a big lead in the all-electric powered luxury car race, but Lucid might end up winning it. The warm and inviting 2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring Performance is in many ways a more holistic and maturely designed EV super sedan than the Model S, and it was our 2022 Car of the Year as a result . But don't let that fuzzy feeling fool you; the Lucid is also a hardcore performer thanks to its impressive handling and overwhelming power in Sprint mode, which unlocks all four digits of horsepower. While the Grand Touring's 1,050 hp soon won't be enough to make it the most powerful EV in the Lucid lineup , it has more than enough juice to pull harder from 0-60 than the earth does.

2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring Performance Specs

Curb Weight: 5,256 lbs

¼ Mile Time: 10.0 seconds at 145.3 mph

Motor Layout: Dual motor, one front, one rear

Maximum Horsepower: 1,050 hp

Maximum Torque: 921 lb-ft

2. 2020 Porsche Taycan Turbo S: 0–60 MPH in 2.4 Seconds

Despite a complete lack of turbos and turbo paraphernalia, taking the quarter mile in the 2020 Porsche Taycan Turbo S likely evokes similar feelings to when our forebears did the same in the 930 Turbo during the 70s. The ironically named Taycan Turbo S boogies to the end of the quarter mile in ways that fighter jets can't , and for a time was the fastest fastest electric car 0-60 run we had ever recorded. Similar to the Audi RS E-Tron GT it shares bones with, the Taycan Turbo S is blessed with beauty, but not long range. While a Chevy Bolt might beat it out in a long-distance cruise, even a Eurofighter Typhoon would have trouble outrunning it while still on the runway.

2020 Porsche Taycan Turbo S Specs

Curb Weight: 5,221 lbs

¼ Mile Time: 10.3 seconds at 133.3 mph

Motor Layout: Dual motor, one front, one rear

Maximum Horsepower: 750 hp

Maximum Torque: 774 lb-ft

1. 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid: 0–60 MPH in 2.3 Seconds

The 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid is the fastest EV, and the fastest car for that matter, we've ever tested in 0-60 acceleration, despite the drama surrounding getting data that matched the standard conditions of our other instrumented tests. How does a Tesla Model S Plaid accelerate so fast? It's fitted with three extraordinarily efficient and powerful electric motors, all-wheel drive thanks to those motors with two at the rear to further bolster the power shove, and an advanced traction control system that interacts seamlessly with said electric motors. Add it all up, and you get a monstrous 1,020 horsepower and 1,050 ft-lb of torque. When experiencing the acceleration of a Plaid, it's abundantly clear that virtually the only force you feel is the Tesla's seatback hurling you forward to a degree that genuinely makes the horizon the floor. Except that floor is rushing up at you far faster than any free fall ever could.

2021 Tesla Model S Plaid Specs

Curb Weight: 4,816 lbs

¼ Mile Time: 9.3 seconds at 152.2 mph

Motor Layout: Tri-motor, one front, two rear

Maximum Horsepower: 1,020 hp

Maximum Torque: 1,050 lb-ft
