History:

Sir James Hope (d. 1661) of Hopetoun (West Lothian), a younger son of Sir Thomas Hope of Craighall (Fife), 1st baronet, married Anne, daughter and heiress of Robert Foulis of Leadhills (Lanarkshire). Their descendants acquired estates in West Lothian, Midlothian, East Lothian (Ormiston, Luffness etc.), Fife (Rankeillour, Rosyth etc.) and Dumfriesshire. Charles Hope (1681-1742) was created Earl of Hopetoun in 1703. Craighall (Fife) was purchased from Sir Thomas Bruce Hope of Craighall, 6th baronet, in 1729.

The Scottish estates of the Johnstone family, Marquesses of Annandale (see Hope-Johnston of Raehills), were inherited by the 3rd Earl of Hopetoun (1741-1816). On his death they passed to his daughter Anne, whilst the Hopetoun estates passed to his half-brother, Major-General John Hope (1765-1823), who succeeded as 4th Earl. Property in East Lothian (Luffness) and Fife (Rankeillour, Craighall) passed to other branches of the Hope family. The 7th Earl was created Marquess of Linlithgow in 1902.

Estates in 1883: 19,180 acres in Lanarkshire; 11,870 acres in West Lothian; 7,967 acres in East Lothian; 2,549 acres in Dumfriesshire and 941 acres in Fife, worth a total of £39,984 a year, exclusive of minerals worth £3,974 a year.
