      Season 1 – Trial & Error

      2017 Comedy List
86% Tomatometer 35 Reviews 87% Audience Score 100+ Ratings Josh, a bright-eyed, young New York defense lawyer, relocates to the small town of East Peck, S.C., where he and the local oddballs that make up his team of investigators take on delightfully absurd murder cases from their makeshift law office in the back of the town's taxidermy shop. As each eccentric case takes unexpected twists and turns, Josh's optimism never falters. In fact, even though life in this small town can be a little... unique (and more than a little strange), he's beginning to find the people of East Peck downright lovable -- and he just might feel like he's starting to fit in. What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Trial & Error hilariously parodies the true-crime genre with consistent laughs, irreverently funny "stupid humor," and animated characters who populate the show's dependably entertaining narratives.

Melanie McFarland Salon.com The joy of "Trial & Error" is its unyielding commitment to ridiculousness, with a script that machine guns the audience with every manner of pun and lewd double-entendre that Standards and Practices allows them to get away with. Jul 16, 2018 Full Review Will Harris AV Club Once you get into fiction, all bets are off, which is why it's so easy to laugh at Trial & Error without feeling guilty about it. Also helpful: the fact that it's really funny. Rated: A- Mar 15, 2017 Full Review Gail Pennington St. Louis Post-Dispatch If you like your comedy dark and twisted, Trial & Error could be just your cup of cyanide-laced coffee. Rated: 2.5/4 Mar 14, 2017 Full Review Pattie Pegler Stuff.co.nz Ah, look, it's okay. Not for now, but later. Perhaps for the flu season when you're lying on the couch, half-conscious, dosing up on Lemsip. Then it'll be suitably soothing and untaxing. Apr 19, 2017 Full Review Joyce Slaton Common Sense Media Clichd courtroom comedy is funnier than it should be. Rated: 3/5 Mar 21, 2017 Full Review Rob Lowman Los Angeles Daily News It's great to see Lithgow, who won a Golden Globe earlier this year for playing Winston Churchill in Netflix's series The Crown, but there's not much challenge here for him and too few laughs. Jennifer O This show is such a hidden gem. Shame in NBC for not promoting better and also on Warner Brothers for not finding a network to continue it. It has done great long running gags and very quirky humor that could've failed but the actors sell it so well I was laughing out loud. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member so damn funny, all the best stuff gets cancelled.... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member fantastic showwwwwwwww nbc reneeeeewwwww Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review b b I'm dumbfounded by the positive reviews for this series. I had watched the first episode but it was so weak I never bothered to watch anymore. I recently tried again to watch the first season after seeing positive reviews and was only able to drag myself through 7 episodes before bailing. The only reason I stayed was that I was expecting some sort of change in quality, based on the reviews. It never came. The jokes are strickly sitcom level with setup/punchline, like clockwork or better yet, a metronome. In fact, the jokes are so obvious that you know what the punchline is before it comes. all the time! That's all bad enough but on top of this incompetence is the premise of the show, all southerners are inbred, probably racist idiots. Inbred, racist idiots can be funny if the material supports it but there is nothing there there. It seems that what they are trying to capture is the sort of bonkers atmosphere of the Bob Newhart series where he is the B&B owner. In that show, there were all kinds of wacky characters with the sane and befuddled Bob in the middle but the writing was much better and well, Bob Newhart.
