Lana’s early story is virtually that of Cinderella’s: a girl discovered at a soda shop aged fifteen and then made a star overnight. From blonde bombshell to box-office queen of the ’40s, Lana led a whirlwind life ultimately marked by eight marriages and a murder trial that made her and her daughter infamous.

The death of Johnny Stompato in 1958 was one of the most notorious scandals in Hollywood history, and the true facts of the case are still hotly disputed.

Lana’s remarkable memoir was originally published in 1982. This new edition features an introduction by Turner Classic Movies host and author Alicia Malone.

About the Author

Julia Jean Turner was born in Idaho in 1921. She relocated with her parents to San Francisco in early childhood. Aged 15, she was discovered at a soda shop and signed a year later to a contract by Hollywood director Mervyn LeRoy. She made her film debut in 1937.Lana went on to become one of Hollywood's premier leading ladies in the 1940s. Her growing reputation as a femme fatale was burnished by her classic role in The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946).Beyond Lana's continued screen popularity in the 1950s, and the press coverage of her personal life (which ultimately included eight marriages), she was subjected to even greater media scrutiny when her lover Johnny Stompanato was stabbed to death in 1958. The following year she had one of the biggest hits of her film career, Imitation of Life.Lana accepted fewer roles from the late 1960s onwards, but she was notably popular as a recurring guest character in 1980s soap opera Falcon Crest. This is a new printing of Turner's 1982 autobiography and I applaud the publisher for reprinting this book. Turner tells of her life in Idaho during the Depression and the move to California, her parent's divorce, and her entry into films. She does not give much gossip about her many co-stars (which is good) but it would have been nice to know a bit more of what she thought of some of them. We know she liked Robert Taylor, Clark Gable, Spencer Tracey and did not like Wendell Corey. She did not discuss much about the actual making of the films or specific scenes. She did not seem to have many close female friends. She mentions Virginia Grey as a friend but does not really expound on what they did together. She describes her elopement with Artie Shaw in 1940 pretty much the way Ann Rutherford (who was in the same film) described it in a talk on her career once although Ann said that Artie tried to call her first and Ann's mother wouldn't let her come to the phone and then Artie called Lana and Artie and Lana eloped the same night. She had a poor judge of husbands - ending up with 7 - all who seemed to want her to support them. She describes in detail the stabbing death of Johnny Stompanato and the consequences it had on her daughter's life. She was a team player at MGM - pretty much doing what they said and when the studio finally let the player's go, was able to gain a resurgence in film and on the stage. She describes her faith in God at the end and crediting it with turning around her life. The book was originally published 13 years before her final illness but it was Turner's way of setting the record straight on her image.

Good read. A lot of pictures, which I liked. The one thing I found disturbing about Lana, was her quest to have more children, when in fact, she was too busy living her movie star lifestyle to be with her only daughter. She went on vacation for 3 months in another country leaving her newborn with NANA and her mother. Not working, a vacation. How could you endure being away from your baby?? She complained that Cheryl loved her mother more than she loved Lana. Duh!! Thank GOD that Cheryl had her grandmother in her life. Why would you keep trying to have more children when you had no time for the child you had? Can you imagine the life they would of lead if the children had survived?

She brought Cheryl home in the presence of a man who threatened to kill her and her mother. Lana brought this dangerous man around her daughter, time and time again. Lana confided in NO one about his abuse, not the police, not her bosses, nor her friends, but yet, one day she decides to unburden her woes to her 15 year old daughter. At what point did she decide to make her problem, her daughters? Why not tell this to the Police?

I don't know, but I found the book to be a fascinating read. She was a beautiful woman, but made some very unwise decisions. For a woman who had it all, one wonders why she needed to be loved so desperately by a man. Seven failed marriages...I get it, back in the day, you had to marry if you were sexual, but she leaped into these marriages without even knowing who they were. Bad judgment. Then she states, "why on why, does this keep happening to me".

Although this book is jam-packed with lots of behind the scenes movie star action and photographs of this physically beautiful woman, this story is definitely a one-sided view of Lana's excuse for her often lurid life. It seems everyone in Hollywood was "out to get" Lana, and she desperately needed to marry (over and over) to rise above it all. She speaks glowingly of every husband, until they, too, turn out to be less than wonderful. It's a bit of a hoot that she becomes disenchanted with these fellows who she spent all of a week dating before saying "I do." Regarding her career, she often talks about how professional and hardworking she was on the set, but I think about 90% of her hard work went into perfecting her nearly flawless appearance. It is no wonder that her make-up man played such a big role in her life. She explains that she was "horrified" at herself on the screen in her debut performance as a "sweater girl", as if she was unaware of her attributes as she flounced across the screen. Although Hollywood back in the 40's and 50's did contain alot of despicable characters, Lana did few selfless acts herself. She professes to loving her only child, but continuously leaves her in the care of her long-suffering mother while she jetsets around the globe with new lovers or new husbands. The reader can only assume that she's (1) incredibly naive or (2) incredibly stupid. She sums it all up to "love" or a "what's a girl to do?" attitude. I don't doubt that given her physical beauty such a lifestyle would be very easy to fall prey to in Hollywood. It's a shame she felt it necessary to drag a child through it with her with disastrous adults. When her daughter begins to act out, (you know, like stabbing Lana's mobster boyfriend) Lana wonders if maybe it's due to her many marriages, houses and lifestyle. Duh! But in the end, she takes credit when her stunning daughter turns out to be a "brillant businesswoman". And, just when you think all hope for redemption is lost, she devotes her last chapter to her devotion to God. Afterall, what's a girl to do?

One of the oddest parts of this book is reading how easily film stars get married and divorced. Some of Lana Turner's eight weddings (to seven men) are as spontaneous as a trip to the movies. She does also reveal that she does not greatly like sex. (Life's ironies!) And she is quite honest about her alcohol issues. I was glad it was quite a short book as I found it less interesting than I expected. But the most stimulating parts for me were when she talked the clothes she wore in her films; and her (quite generous) insights into other actors.

This book has a rather unusual and unexpected feature in that the last batch of photographs has been inserted upside down! Luckily, my husband (for whom I bought this book as a present) thought it was an added attraction rather than a mistake, and it has not spoiled his enjoyment one jot! The one slightly disturbing thing is that this was not spotted by the seller before dispatch but, who knows, they might have increased the price if they HAD spotted it, thinking its value as a 'one-off' might be tremendous! A good read,nevertheless.
