Man dies in Wembley scaffold collapse

One man was killed and another injured after scaffolding apparently collapsed at the Wembley Stadium building site, an ambulance spokesman said today.

The first man was pronounced dead at the site in north west London by a doctor and the second was taken to Central Middlesex Hospital by ambulance with leg injuries.

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said two ambulances, a rapid response car and an air ambulance were sent to the scene after receiving a call at about 8.25am.

Two inspectors from the Health and Safety Executive were sent to investigate the cause of the accident, a spokeman said.

Police said it was believed a raised platform collapsed without warning and fell about 100ft.

Two people - both believed to be workmen - were involved.

One was trapped under the scaffolding.

The other was taken to hospital by helicopter.

A spokesman for Wembley Stadium said: "I can confirm that unfortunately one person has been killed in an incident today.

"We're trying to establish the full facts at the moment with the construction contractor Multiplex, who are in charge of the project overall."
