K. Todd Freeman portrays Mr. Poe in the Netflix adaption of A Series of Unfortunate Events.
A Series of Unfortunate Events[]
Freeman found the frustrating character of Arthur Poe very fun to portray. He found that Poe always thinks he's doing his best job and that everything he's doing is in the best interest of the kids, and so he became a happy, cheerful characters as opposed to a dour stereotype. "He couldn't be mean, so he had to be stupid."
He also believes that Poe's cough is a psychological expression of insecurity, much like a nervous laugh. The cough would manifest when he was in a bind, and his mind would tell him to do something because it's what he's always done, but part of him knew something was wrong with that, but he couldn't understand that.[1]
