The Suimeikan is a ryokan that was established 80 years ago along the Hida River, where it currently remains sitting at the heart of Gero Onsen, one of the three most famous onsen locations in Japan. Guests can experience traditional Japanese culture inside the ryokan, which features a Japanese garden, a genuine Noh stage, as well as ceramic and art works. Guests can also enjoy hot springs with skin beautifying effects in three spots, including an open-air bath with an indoor bath, a large scenic bath, and a large communal indoor bath with a hinoki sauna. The communal scenic bath can be used 24 hours a day. We offer a variety of guest rooms in the Seiranso, Rinsenkaku, Hisenkaku, Sansuikaku manors. The hotel also features plenty of facilities such as a swimming pool, gym, beauty salon, and a bar. Shuttle Service Gero Station ⇔ Hotel *No prior reservation required. Shuttle will match limited express train arrivals to meet guests. The hotel is located just a 3 min walk from there.

Excellent location near the JR station. We stayed in a room with 3 western bed. Room was clean, spacious and the condition was very good. There were 2 sitting areas in our room, one with chairs and the other on the tatami with heated blanket.

The onsen was good and not very crowded. We stayed one night and was able to try all 3 public onsens. The hotel has a system which allowed guests to check crowd condition of the onsens so that we could choose to visit when they were less crowded. At check in, an employee escorted us to the room and gave us an orientation to all the locations in the hotel and our room. He explained clearly how we could utilize the facilities and the system to check onsen conditions. Employees were generally knowledgeable and friendly.
We managed to book the half boarding package which saved us a lot of trouble as we didn’t find many dinning choices in the town. However, only reason why I did not rate this hotel a 5 is because of the dinning experience. I feel that the food quality could be improved. The buffet breakfast was mediocre and quality of food for the set dinner could be better.
This place is definitely worth a visit with its good location, good rooms and great service.

Suimeikan was a really good hotel. We decided to stop in Gero which turned out to be a very nice traditional onsen town. Beautiful place. The hotel is just across the bridge from the main town.
The hotel is big, beautiful and welcoming. It is a traditional Japanese onsen hotel and feels wonderful to the small details.
The have a indoor and outdoor pool, game room, 3 different onsens, many different restaurants and a lobby lounge with a beautiful Japanese garden. Lots of parking space.
There are three main buildings. We stayed in Sansui and had the new Japanese Western room. We had a corner room with a beautiful view of both the bridge and the garden. The room was cozy and comfortable. Because it was newly renovated it didn't smell like old smoke as I read in other reviews. The room was great for us.
Dinner at the Japanese restaurant was super. Breakfast buffet was not very good, food just wasn't very good.
We visited during Golden Week and the hotel was booked solid, however we never felt that the place was crowded. The hotel absorbs guests very well.
Service is excellent, very friendly. Hotel was easy to use and enjoy. Hours for use were all really flexible. Some hotels are just too restrictive.
Of the three onsens my favorite was the Big Cedar bath and it had a sauna, second was the Outdoor bath. The Panaroma bath seemed old.
Definitely worth a visit to Gero and Suimeikan if you are in the area.

Gero is highly recommended when i did my research on where else i can extend to before leaving for Nagoya. Gero Suimeikan was the 'best' when i checked out rankings.

We booked a deluxe family room for 4 and was told this is the newest wing. Comparing the pics shown, our jaw dropped the moment we stepped in the lobby. Like many have reviewed, the property shows signs of serious aging, the furniture, the lift etc. You feel like you are going back to the 80s.

Our supposingly newer rooms came with very vintage tap that you used to see in hotels back in 80s, vintage hair dryer mounted in the toilet wall that could not even dry our hair after using for 20mins. We have the smallest 14inch TV in the room that i havent seen in ages in hotels.

We booked their kaiseki dinner for one night at 7pm. They didnt allow us to go in at 6.55pm. Dinner was a disappointment having to pay for 88000 Yen for wagyu and 11000yen for hida beef. The sauce used in hida beef just kills off the taste of the beef after you cooked it.

Bf was ok..but its free seating and you have to go find your own table.

This is the only hotel i stayed so far that has many english speaking and also mandarin speaking staff.

This hotel is really close to JR station, it's about 3-5 minutes walk. This hotel got 3 parking lots mainly due to this is a HUGE hotel!. It has 3 different onsens for guests to enjoy. I think that's the good things I can remember. Other than that, this hotel is really dated! The first room we got was quite bad that it had a strong cigarette smell (we requested non- smoking room). The young lady lead us to the room explained that all these rooms used to be smoking room. Anyway, I called front desk and changed to a new room. It was good at first, but after the air conditioner ran for a while, we started to smell cigarette again, but less severe. So we just opened window and the air purifier in the room. With the money this hotel charged, I think there will be a better option in that area.

I must confess that my rating is partially based on the very high expectations I had before the visit. This ryokan was highly recommended to me by my local friends. Also, all my colleagues from Japan always prayed the service in good ryokans, so I decided to come despite high price tag.

I did not find anything too spectacular on the check-in - yes, personal "bellman", a girl in kimono bringing at the end of introduction to facilities a cup of team and sweets, looks luxury, but it does not add enough atmosphere of care.

The onsen (thermal baths) itself is fine, probably very similar to less private ones...

Finally, I was disappointed with the restaurant. I reserved Tokiwa (which is mostly Japanese food with some elements of western cuisine). The food was fine, but I had better kitchen in Japan (for similar or lower price). Possibly, because I stayed solo, and was eating just by myself, I was assigned a table in a corner of the room and it was barely visited by waiters. Some of the courses I had to wait for minutes (you would get there about 8 courses, as in any authentic Japanese place), so it was not as enjoyable as it could be.

In summary, I don't think I would recommend this place - overpriced for the level of service they provide.

After viewing all the YouTube videos of suimekan, we planned our trip based on its availability. We were in for a major disappointment as our room was aged, the sofa so stained that even my army-going son would not sit on it, and the hairdryer had more than hair stuck to it…

We were asked to top up SGD$88 per person if we wanted to upgrade to the annex block (with the onsen on the third floor). Or SGD55 per person for the same block (onsen on 9th floor). We accepted that because the room requiring the top-up was renovated and we could at least get decent rest.

Sigh… what a way to drag its own name down after meticulously building it up over 80 years … a shame if it goes downhill from here…

Stayed 1N in a superior room with Tatami in Mar 2023 at the main building. Room face train station, can hear the train at night but bearable. Instead the talking at the corridor is loud. Easy to offload luggage at the front of the hotel. Ample free parking lots. Spacious room with Pola toiletries. Check-in staff speaks limited English. Had French dinner set at Baden Baden, cost ¥8,800/person, great food with Hida beef, only minus is service staff do not speak English so not as enthusiastic in explaining the food served. Adequate breakfast spread, book the early breakfast slot, be early else be prepared for long queue. Onsen on top floor has great view of the river. Good location, river is just behind the hotel. Lawson is 3mins walk across the bridge.

The location is excellent and spacious hotel.
Most disappointing for us was the cup of coffee at Evian lounge.
That Blend Coffee was just like cheap Japanese tea, but they charge ¥650 for a cup of “Blend Coffee” ‼️

Old style spa resort in Gero. Right beside the train station with views across the river and mountains. We stayed in a standard twin room that was serviceable, quite a strange layout, but beds very comfortable. Room was showing its age. The onsen’s were great if a little crowded sometimes, but couldn’t get a reservation in any of the private ones at all over our 5 night stay. Same for the restaurants, unless you prebook at them you won’t get in. Luckily there are quite a few good dinner options over the bridge in Gero proper. Overall a very relaxing stay. Customer service was exceptional as expected.

To be honest I am sort of confused why I would choose this Ryokan at the begining, and it also taught me a lesson not to trust the ranking too much.

It has been a while Since I last wrote a review, this ryokan really has to be that bad to motivate me. I stayed at more than 30 onsen regions and 100+ ryokan, this one is definitely the worst I have ever been, even worst than the local guesthouse.

To start with, there are just too much, maybe its easier for me to make a little list for some of them( i cant write down all as it is just worst)
- havent seen a parking assistant would try to shout and order in an annoyed attitude, still do not get a clue on the reason
- left unattended for more than half an hour at the lobby
- small and smelly room
- no any explanation was given by the staff( save the language barrier thing, at other hotels i sayed though they are not able to communicate in english at all could still use body language, the staff here wont even try
- staff is not friendly at all, which is one of the most important feature in japanese ryokan
- staff being late for meals
- pathetic arrangement
- havent been waiting 5 lifts and still not be able to get in
- tragedy service( no help at all inside room, like the basic luggage moving)
- none is trying to keep the order inside the onsen, people wearing clothes/shoes/ swimming inside, disgusting
- no wifi in room
- gym, pool and the massage chair arent free
- will expressed for viewing the fireworks in room, and was assigned the only one room at the floor with opposite direction, any other room is in right direction
- tons of people inside onsen and ruining the order, not a chance to enjoy nor relax at all
- freezing inside the lift
Im sort of tired into typing now...

I believe the only good thing for this ryokan is they really has quite a lot of art things, like painting and vase and glasses and so on. Yet those is definitely not enough for the price it requested, i cant imagine paid 70,000+ for an experience like this, even sone ryokan under 10,000 cpuld do a better service. In the past it maybe bad for foreigners, good for japanese, yet for today I am confident to say its tragedy for foreigners, worst for japanese.

In brief, if you stayed at ryokan before, you know the above listed things are simply unacceptable even for 20,000, let alone 70,000. If you havent stayed at ryokan before. Do not come here as it would be a nightmare and destroy the fame and tradition of Ryokan.

Terrible nightmare.

Is this hotel wheelchair-accessible? Which wing has non-smoking rooms? Thanks!
Answer from AshleyT555

I asked for a non smoking room. Most rooms have ash trays meaning they do not really differentiate. Usually a service staff will bring you to your room on first day so you will know how to walk around. If the room is smells of smoke you can ask to change. Mine is ok with no smell ( sensitive nose person)
