South Pasadena’s Mia Holden wins three titles, lots of records broken at Rio Hondo League track finals

South Pasadena's Mia Holden was the only competitor to win three individual titles at Friday's Rio Hondo League track finals, and La Canada's Maya DeBrouwer and South Pasadena's Abigal Errington had epic races in the 1,600 and 3,200 meter races

SOUTH PASADENA — South Pasadena track and field standout Mia Holden had triple the reason to celebrate her last Rio Hondo League finals appearance.

The UCLA-bound senior captured three league championships on Friday night — the 100-meter hurdles, 300 hurdles and 200 dash — as she was one of many to shine at the meet.

Holden’s specialties are the hurdles which she won with ease, but it was the 200-meter race that she seemed most pleased with winning.

“I decided to run (the 200) just as a workout but also to just see what I can do after the 300-meter hurdles when I was tired,” Holden said. “I was really happy with it.”

Holden won the 200 in 25.19 as she pulled away from La Canada’s Sarina Parks who finished second in 25.52.

“I was definitely tired,” Holden said about running the 200. “It was like a 10-minute break in-between (the 300-meter hurdles and the 200-meter race) but I tried to roll out my legs and calm myself down. It wasn’t my best race but it’s one of the fastest races I’ve run this season.”

Holden won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.66. She won the 300-meter hurdles in 43.35, which is the new Rio Hondo League Finals meet record. It surpasses the mark of 43.90 from San Marino’s Omhunique Browne set in 2011.

Holden was not the only athlete to win multiple league championships.

South Pasadena senior Keeran Murray won the boys 1600-meter and 800-meter races for the second consecutive year. His 1600-meter time of 4:13.28 set the league finals meet record, breaking the old record of 4:14.34 set in 1980 by La Canada’ s Andy DiConti. Murray’s 1600-meter time is also his personal best in the race.

“I don’t get to run the 1600 meters that much because the 800 is my specialty,” Murray said. “But I think as I build more of an endurance base through cross country and distance events in track, the mile is becoming something more and more I can see myself doing in the future.”

Murray won the 800 in a time of 2:00.10. He’s run 1:53 before but said he decided to run the 1,600 meters hard and take the 800 easy ahead of the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 prelims next Saturday.

Arguably, the most exciting races of the meet were the girls 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters. They featured two of the top runners in CIF-SS in La Canada’s Maya DeBrouwer and South Pasadena’s Abigail Errington. They talked to each other before the races and decided they would run the 1,600 meters fast and take it easy in the 3200-meter race ahead of CIF prelims next Saturday.

Errington led the 1,600-meter race pretty much throughout with DeBrouwer right behind until the final stretch when DeBrouwer passed Errington and edged her in a tight race to win in 4:49.44. Errington came in at 4:49.71. Both smashed the previous league finals meet record of 4:59.28 set by Ellaney Materese of La Canada in  2021.

The situation was reversed in the 3,200-meter race with Errington narrowly winning in a time of 11:15.79. DeBrouwer’s time of 11:15.84 was  just 5 hundredths of a second behind.

Errington praised DeBrouwer after the races.

“It’s awesome having someone as talented as Maya in the league, because you always have the opportunity to race fast,” she said. “It really is a huge gift to be surrounded by such talent. It really pushes you to new levels.”

South Pasadena’s Peter Dickinson dominated the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles, winning both events. His 15.64 in the 110-meter hurdles gave him the win by nearly a second. He won the 300-meter hurdles race in 40.12, which was nearly two seconds ahead of second-place finisher Zeke Sayles from Monrovia.

Monrovia’s Brian Salazar won two individual championships and anchored his team’s 4 x 100-meter relay squad to victory in a time of 42.84. Salazar sprinted past his competitors to win the 100-meter dash in 11.12. He also leaped to a high jump title with a mark of 6-feet even.

San Marino freshman Isabella Aladefa won the girls 100-meter dash in 12.49.

La Canda won the girls 4 x 100-meter relay in 48.28.

Katie McGuinness won the girls long jump for La Canada with a leap of 19 feet, 5 inches while Levi-Bar Cohen from South Pasadena won the boys long jump with a mark of 20 feet, 8.5 inches.

Monrovia’s Davonte Jones won the boys discus with a throw of 101 feet, 10 inches while freshman Keilani Kooper from San Marino won the girls shot put with a mark of 33 feet, 3.5 inches.

Temple City’s Anthony Pequeno won the 200-meter dash on the boys side with a time of 22.22 seconds.
