In this loose adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre, childhood sweethearts Kamla and Shankar are separated and grow up in different worlds. The girl is brought up to be a priestess, while the boy becomes a dejected thakur, turned vindictive by life's injustices. Fate inevitably brings them together again, but Kamla does not know about her beloved's secret.

More of a 'greatest hits' of scenes from Jane Eyre transplanted into a 1950s filmi universe than a direct adaptation. Heavy on duty vs. passion themes & redeeming a bad man fantasy, light on asserting power over your own life as a young woman fantasy. And there's no talk of this Jane Eyre analogue being plain, because I hate to tell you this but no one will ever love you as much as the camera loves Madhubala.
